We're starting in on it around 8am. I'm pretty much useless by 2 or 3 in the afternoon on these hot summer days...

 

okay you all missed it. My friend's 01 Limited got all the attention on Sunday. Though tempted I kept my mitts off her coveted 01-02 tail light lenses....

We got an air filter installed, replaced the fuel filter, replaced the auto tranny radiator, cleaned battery connections, and probably some other small items I am forgetting to mention.

The replacement of the radiator was so simple! Honestly guys if you are on the fence at all about what to do to prevent milkshake occurring to you, you have to strongly consider just doing a replacement radiator. Total parts were around $170-radiator, new hose clamps, and Toyota red coolant and a couple of quarts of ATF to refill the tranny for loss.

removing the grille was the hardest thing, but with one person doing the clips and two people providing outward pressure it is much easier. The grille then pops back into place when done.

I consider myself an auto tranny radiator replacement wiz now so if you local guys need space and help stay in touch. A very rewarding day-fuel filter still kicked my butt but I have people who know people....

How much Toyota red coolant did you need when you replaced the radiator? I've got a new radiator coming and want to do the swap asap to avoid a failure.

 

We used all of one full gallon and part of a 2nd went into the overflow tank.

We mixed with one full gallon of distilled water.

Ron - I see you just replaced the radiator and didn't do anything with the cooler. If replacing the radiator enough, or should an external cooler be added as well?

My 99 only has ~70k and doesn't get driven that much, but for a $120 koyo radiator and a few hours time...

fireball-I'm actually a manual tranny guy myself, but on my friend's 01 Limited we simply did do just the radiator.

Opinions vary so continue to gather them from other auto tranny guys like yourself, but the radiator replacement itself was enough peace of mind for my friend. She does no towing but a lot of mountain passes during ski season.

Congrats on keeping your mileage so low on your 99!

 

I just replaced the radiator and left it at that. I'm not going to keep my 4Runner for more than another ~100,000 miles and if I do I'll just replace the radiator again. Easy enough and not expensive.

 

Thanks for the quick responses. Ordered one of the Koyo radiators and will install it sometime in the next few weeks. Should be worry free for a good long time!
