The problem with the old 4-6-8 was that the driver could feel and hear power changes in the motor as the cyclinders became active or deactive which is unacceptable. The new system will have the same exhaust sound level when running on 4 cylinders as it will when running on 8. Also the throttle pedal position will not change when the motor goes from 4 to 8 or 8 to 4, something the 4-6-8 could not do.

Rob's point is spot on, and one I probably should have made from the get go. Its really apples and oranges when talking about doing it yourself vs the new stuff on the market!
