I have had my tire on top of my runner now for over a year and I can't fit into any parking garages, and it makes it a little more top heavy. I decided last week that I was going to make a rear tire carrier. I worked about 8 hrs on the design and removal of the old bumper and then cranked it out in 25 hours this weekend 17 just on Friday Anyway I though I would post a couple of pics.

That is the first rear swing that i have seen made by someone on their own that competes with the custom rockware swing that i have as well as some of the other CO boys on the board.

Saved yourself a lot of $$$ by hammering out the labor in your garage. My only recommendation is that you be sure to use a super beefy hinge joint with sealed bearings...don't want that hinge busting on you when your driving or on the trail...couldn't really see the detail in the hardware you used. but from the snaps you put up...

I went with something very different than what I've ever seen as far as the hinge goes. I threaded 3" of 1.5" black pipe which is 2" o.d. I then threaded a coupler on it and welded it to the 2" square tubing. The top and bottom of the threaded pipe is held on by a 1/4" plate on top and a 1/2 plate on the bottom. I now going to put some of the paint on rubber which will cover the joint so very little dirt will get in. Only time will tell. As for strength right now I can sit on the end of the bar with it unhooked and it barely flexes. I'm not 100% sure how many of the tire carriers are connected to the vehicle, I have it mounted to the frame and body with it allowing for some play between the two.

I would like to make them for people the problem is that the metal shop where I do all of my work is 150 miles away and with grad school and work I barely get time to make parts for my own vehicle. That's why I worked 17 hrs strait on Fri.

It's nice to have access to a metal shop with every tool you can imagine. Especially plazma cutters, they are a major time saver.
