dealer tells me my water pump leaks....sometimes.
and sometimes it doesn't? what is that supposed to mean? how can it leak sometimes? they are trying to get me to replace the water pump and timing belt for $650.00 but i'm not sure i want to spend that kind of money if it's not needed just yet.
if the pump is leaking sometimes, shouldn't i see some coolant leaking from somewhere? ..or is the pump totally concealed by all the plastic on the front of the engine?

wow....that's a ton of miles for two years..I don't see how it could leak only sometimes. It either leaks or it doesn't.....do you have another place you can get an opinion from on it or is it already torn apart?

thanks for the replies. ....i guess i can see how it would leak sometimes. ..but the way the service advisor explained it to me made me think they just had it up on the rack and it was just sitting at idle. ..he said "sometimes it was leaking, sometimes it wasn't"
i've decided to get a 2nd opinion. ..i know i can get the pump and belt changed for less $$$$$ than they want at the dealer anyway.

You're due to replace t he timing belt anyway, and the water pump should be changed then as well so it might be a moot point? Trust me on this, the prior owner on mine didn't change the water pump when they did the belt and I just spent $600 to replace it at 130k when it would've only costy another $100 or so to do earlier and no extra labor. I'd say just do and then you don't have to worry about either for an other 100k or so... just my .02...good luck

On the nose there Jim. I don't know if Toyota's water pumps are the same but GM waterpumps have "weep holes" in them so you can't confuse yourself with that, but it shouldn't pour when it leaks. Look to see if your hood is a bit wet has has been wet and you will know if it's leaking for sure or not.
