Question Daytime running lights needed!

I have to install daytime running lights on to my 1994 4Runner for a Inspection.
Does anybody have a quick idea of how to set it up? I’m looking for quick and easy so I can put it back to normal after the inspection. Any ideas?

splice a wire to both headlights, run wires to a relay which is spliced into something that turns on with ignition... pretty simple and should take no longer than 20 min

They expect you to have DRL's on a vehicle that produced in a year before DRL's even became standard? Wouldn't they grandfather in a vehicle produced before a certain year? I certainly would mess with wiring. Plus they wouldn't be DRL's for real because they run at a lower wattage when the headlights are turned off. All you'd be doing is turning on your headlights every time you turned your ignition on.

I’m importing a US model into Canada. In Canada I think every model has it standard from 1990 on. I don’t really want it, but rules are rules so I’ll comply (for now).

I’m thinking of using the switch for the headlights now and just cutting the wire and applying power there… (The switch would be useless but it would not matter because the lights are on anyway…) Not too sure if this will cause a problem for the running lights though? It should be only for one day though…

Add a resistor in betweent he relay and headlight and you'd have TRUE DRLs.

Canadian Tire has an aftermarket DRL module you can add, about $30 or so. At least the Coquitlam one had it 3-4 months ago, check your nearest one.

I installed a DRL kit into the 89 S10 Blazer I used to have. The headlights would come on at about 30% and only when the ignition was on. Wish I could remember who made the kit, but I think I just picked it up at an auto parts store.

I tried to get them to come on, but it is a little more complicated than I first thought.
I took eric-the-red's advice and bought the kit. Super easy install.

at the time of production so it shouldnt matter to import it. its like a car that doesnt have seat belts (some older classics), legally you dont have to have them but common sense would strongly suggest installing them. im not up on the cdn rules for drls but the brain trust we elected over the years have adopted some quirky things.

Hi folks,

I realize this post is as old as dirt, but I wanted to say thanks for the help.

My USA spec '97 Tacoma is going in for it's Federal RIV inspection tomorrow and it has to have working DRL. Picked up a generic aftermarket DRL kit at Cdn Tire for $25 and it only took me about 30 mins to install. (Would have been quicker, but I had to pull the battery to mount the module.)

One wire goes to the headlight common.
One wire goes to the park light circuit + (includes dash lighting)
One fused wire to battery +
One wire to ground
One wire has to go to an ignition wire (for engine signal)

Simple as pie. However, I don't think I'll leave it installed after the inspection. I'm planning on adding some Hellas and a 4Crawler harness kit, so when I get to that I'll remove the DRL.

I have a 1997 4Runner, and I have to do this same DRL mod for Canadian inspection. I want to just use a relay for the job, but how do I find a suitable wire to tap? Also, there are three wires coming out of each of my headlights--how do I know which to tap? Is there a wiring guide somewhere that I can look at, or is it all just trial and error?

I guess I can just go to Canadian Tire and get the kit after I have moved up there, but I would prefer to take care of as much now as possible.

If you are importing a vehicle into Canada that is less then 15 years old you must go through RIV, costs about $220 on top of tax and duty. Check out www.riv.ca for more info. I passed with just hooking the amber driving light so they came on when the truck was started. I don't think it has to be the headlights.

Thanks for the info--I spoke with RIV last week, and was very happy to hear that for all my vehicles, the only modification required was DRLs on the 4Runner. I want the headlights themselves to be my DRLs--Canadian stats show that within the first couple of years after requiring vehicles to have DRLs, frontal collisions went down by 11%. There may be other factors involved (improved braking/steering systems, better ABS, etc.), but that is too big a drop to ignore.

I ended up just breaking out the multi-meter to figure out which of the three headlight wires supplied the power. For future reference:

Driver side headlight: red wire with blue stripe
Passenger side headlight: red wire with white stripe

I'm not sure if those wires apply to any models other than the 1997 4Runners.
