Crashed! $4K of damage on a 96 with 130+ miles
So my baby (aka 96 4runner LTD) got hit in the front right side nose. Just got a quote on the damage and it is $4K! The accident isn't my fault but in NYC you have shared liability through insurance. I still don't know how much I will be held liable (which is a crock) for but am awaiting a call back on it from the other person's insurance.
i've been off the boards for a while due to work and other things but just wanted to vent a little to ppl that would understand.

"a 96 limited" -me
"really! man that thing is clean." tow truck guy

Get a steel bumper and laugh at the other person if it happens again.
But that shared liability is crap. I've never heard of this before. Were both of you at fault?I just can't make sense of it. So if I'm sitting at a light and some douche crashes into me while texting, I have to pay for half? Bogus.

I wasn't at fault (in all honesty). The person even said they were wrong. I'm lobbing in a call to their insurance again to see what happens.
The result could be 100% of their cost or we can end up sharing the cost.

With $4k worth of damage, it might be totaled. Hopefully for you (and your truck), it isn't. I would look into getting a steel bumper instead of a factory replacement.

last year I had an 89 year old lady turn left in front of me at an intersection and stop in front of my with my 2nd gen 4runner. I went though a yellow light with all 4's locked up doing about 40 mph and she turned in front of me and stopped and braced for impact(she was in a toyota coralla(sp?), my truck was on 4 inchs of lift and 33's. And my truck was still called totalled cause the way it hit the frame. I went to the shop early in the morning where it was towed to, pulled all my cool stuff out of it, sent a fax to the insurance company of all the recipents of all the aftermarket stuff I put on it. And still got over 7 grand for my truck from insurance. Worked out good for me! I miss that truck though.....

A lot of insurance companies will not no longer pay for aftermarket items or only pay up to a certian amount. My insurance allows me to add coverage for aftermarket items or enhancements. Seems pretty reasonable. I played with the coverage quotes and if I added $1000 in aftermarket expenses my premium went up $4-6 dollars

I think you misunderstood, these gentlemen are telling you to get a winch bumper as your own insurance in the event of another collision. It won't be covered by insurance but you'll be good to go. I hit a Corolla pretty hard and suffered only minor grill cracks and that was from might Light Force light biting into the grill.

yup car is totaled. $4k of damages and awaiting to see how much the other guy's insurance will pay.
how exactly does totaling work. I never had the heart to do it but know think i may do this and put money towards a newer model.
details:
i don't have collision coverage so my insurance said i need to deal with the other driver's insurance. her insurance doesn't have collision but there is shared liability (NY law) so they are not covering the full damages but will cover most
