Cracked Windshield.... now what???

Hi all,

Today I woke up here in NYC to drive to work and as I was cleaning the snow off my windshield I noticed a fairly large crack on it. It starts at the bottom of the passenger side wiper and it goes straight up to about the mid-height of the windshield and then it turns towards the driver side stopping in the center of the windshield below the rearview mirror. I am at work now so I’ll have to wait till later to inspect further. It didn’t look like it was caused by impact… I guess these things just happen sometimes.

My biggest fear is that it will break completely.. . is this possible??

I have heard/read about glass repair shops... Anyone with any experience with these shops???

Any thoughts/advise on this matter will be appreciated…

Thanks,

maguirre

Windshield was probably already cracked, cold temperatures probably just made it run.

Get some replacement estimates and file it on your insurance.

X2 what wabbit said. No it will not break, windshield glass has some plastic stuff in it so you can hit it all you want and all it will do it break the glass but it will still hold together....

It won't break, I used to live in the rockies and pretty much everyone up there had a cracked windshield. My friends old blazer's windshield looked like a spider web and he drove it like that for years.
I just moved back to the east coast and had to get mine replaced for inspection and I shopped around and found a place that charged me $156 installed and put on new wipers. Other places wanted around $250 so I would take your time and try to find a good deal.

Also, don't let them try to soak you for new trim, it's not necessary.

no problem, it's crazy how fast a crack can grow in cold temperatures. Some mornings when I was warming my truck up I could literally sit there, and with the defrost on, watch the crack travel across my windshield, until it got to the bottom and stopped. I guess it had nowhere else to go. I wouldn't even have bothered to get it replaced if I was still in Colorado.
