Cost of repainting the roof? - Updated
Another frustrating day in the city, the parking attendants ripped my Thule rack off the roof. I have several deep scratches and dents in the roof. I always check the truck before I get in, but I didn’t notice if the roof rack was really in the tracks or not. I got 5 blocks or so away until I heard a huge thud; it was the rear bar toppling over. I’m surprised I made it 5 blocks. Obviously I am not a happy camper.
Has anyone had their roof repainted? I am curious how much it will cost. They gave me a form to fill out and said that they would take care of it. We will see.

Sorry to hear about that.
Man, the nerve of them trying to pass it off like nothing happened when they knew good & well they fubared it.
I am so glad I don't have to ever let someone touch my rig unless it's at the dealer getting something serviced.
As far as the painting goes, talk with this guy.
He has resurected his 4Runner a few times from the dead.
He has not updated his page in eons though, so I can't find his pics of the damage his rig went through.
He does all his body work himself.

Good idea, I forgot that Lee was/is in the auto body business. I am trying to avoid posting the same thread on both boards. I'll give it until tomorrow, and then I may post on ODW.
Damn, I hate working in the city (like I don't bitch about it enough)
Does ARB or TJM make roof armor? I used to make fun of the 'safari in the city' wheelers, but I think it may be time to join them

I just remembered that HBoss had the same thing happen to him. Did a search and got an idea of how much it would cost.
The only thing that concerns me is 3rd gens don't have a roof seam. The roof flows into the rear of the truck past the 'C' pillar and goes to the tailgate. Shouldn't all of that be repainted to ensure color consistency?

^ Yah I had the same question...

I'm looking to put in a roof rack or some Thule load bars, too...
What's the clearance when that stuff is added? (Humm...guess I could just add it to whatever the clearance is now, which I don't know... w/ factory roof rack...)
I know even w/o that stuff it seems pretty close when parking in some garages...

I just measured the truck as I am looking for a new garage. You will be fine with 6' if you do NOT have a roof rack and run stock tires and suspension. Add whatever you need for factory or after market rack. I had a Thule rack and I think I needed about 6' 4" to be safe with that setup.
Grab a tape measure and a level, that is what I did.
Getting a couple of estimates tomorrow on the repair, should be interesting.

That must hurt seeing your rig take that kind of beating.
I don't know if this is going to help but a few years ago there was a severe hail storm here in New Orleans. My 95 4runner took a pretty good beating. Little craters everywhere! Allstate set up a estimate assembly line in a shopping center parking lot for all the battered cars and clients.
I never got out of my car. Drove up to the adjuster, who looked at my truck for all of 30 seconds and said, "they will have to cut the roof off and replace it, replace the hood, and paint the whole vehicle!" His estimate was $5200!!!. Five minutes later down the assembly line I had a check for $5200. I tore out of there as fast a possible and hide for 3 days. I felt like I stole Grandmas pain killers! J/K.
Anyway, today I have the most unique mod of all here: a beautifully cratered hood and roof. In the right light it looks like a sprawling moonscape.
The paint in the craters has held up just as well as the rest of the Runner!

Well, just thought I would update the story.
I have had two estimates from the two better shops in this area. One is for $1300 and one for just under $2000. They have to paint the roof, remove the quarter panel glass, blend the roof paint into the quarter panels, and clear coat the roof and quarter panels. This also includes ‘roping’ off the windshield trim to paint and clear underneath the trim.
Now I get to submit this to the garage; wish me luck.

Yup, had the same thing happy. Sorry to hear it's happened to someone else.
The guy did the paint from the roof, down the 'C pillar', up to the pinstripe. He did his best to wear it down a little to have it match as best as possible. Wish I never had a pinstripe on the sides but it's too late to remove them now.
Anyhow, you can see the quotes I got and the amount I eventually paid here:

I hope all goes well for your 4Runner
