Hey guys whats up?

I have an 81 toyota 4X4 lifted about 5 inches front and rear on a set of 33's. I usually just drive it around town but I am about to start college which requires some highway driving. After 20-25 minutes of driving the temp gauge is about half way up and I am not sure if it is overheating or if I am just being paranoid. The reason I think it is overheating is because the top radiator hose blew a little hole in it one time. Also if I just start it and then let it run rev it every now and again for about 10-15 mintues I can watch where steam is comming out around radiator cap. It has never gone above maybe 2/3 the way up on the little gauge but I don't want to hurt my rig and warp the head or something. I have replaced the following....

radiator
top radiator hose
thermostat
water pump

and I am not sure whats up now. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Gimmie some tests to do so I have something to do today. Thanks a lot-Sampson

steam should not be coming out of the radiator cap.... unless its to the point that its cold enoguh where the heat is jsut radiating through the very cold air and leving a signature mark... like seeing your breath in the air.....

if the guage goes to half it should be ok....

the hole in the hose could have just been a fluke type thing

 

Yeah I am in WA around Seattle so it gets damn cold around this time of year. I am pretty sure I can see my breathe outside right now..... let me got check ........yep can see my breathe clear as day. I just figured that if it was that cold and the temp was hitting mid way now it might hit higher in the summer when it warms up. I really don't want to warp a head or something. It also diesels sometimes? think that could be related? Anyway thanks for the post and more sugestions will be appreciated.-Sampson

 

Sampson, that's why you have a thermostat, it's supposed to read 1/2 a gauge summer or winter. Sounds like you might need a radiator cap though. If the cap don't fix it, you might have a crack in the radiator neck.

 

Cool sounds like I might just end up picking up a new thermostat that opens earlier if nothing else just to put my mind at ease. maybe get one that opens at like 160 instead of 190. ALso how would you got about fixing a little crack at the neck of the radiator if I do have one? Could I just throw some kind of metal epoxy on there where you combine the stuff from two tubes and it hardens. lol can't remember the name of it right now, but you know what I am talking about. use a 180 degree t/stat,no cooler,and dont attempt to repair the crack unless u enjoy pissing in the wind.lol.get a new rad or let a rad repair solder a new neck in it.

 

I don't know where you can get one, but if you can then buy a radiator pressure cap. You can pump so many psi into it then look for any leaks or see if the needle drops to be sure you have a coolant leak somewhere. I would just suggest letting a professional repair it, usually trying to fix it yourself is just a waste of time. The dieseling part should not be related. Maybe check the timing or switch gas stations to see if it helps.

It's JB Weld. I got several spots on my radiator that I've patched and no leaks yet.
