Considering 98' 4-Runner - trouble spots to look for?

Hi guys.. I am considering a local 1998 4-Runner 4wd, with around 185K. It looks nice and no problems stated, but I need to check it out. I did a search, but it was a little "busy" and wondering if anyone can give me some of the main troublespots to look for on a 98' 4-Runner? Lastly, what kind of MPG's could one typically expect from a 4wd Runner? Thanks!

Miles are a little high...what price is the owner asking?

MPG's will range depending on engine/trans combo, but my 2000 V6 auto gets about 16-20 give or take.

1.Any visible leaks
2.Has the timing belt been changed
3.See how it drives, shifts and brakes
4. What are you using it for?
5. Some people keep maintenance records seee if they have any.
6. Look at the trany fluid and make sure it doesnt look or smell burnt.
7.Tires? are they worn out,do you want to upgrade them anyway?
8. Its 100 degrees here see if the air works if you need it
Thats a few big obvious points to check
I just paid 5k for a 97 with 196k on it, it now has 204k

Along with the timing belt, the water pump should have been done. They should have been done around 180K, if they haven't it's about $650 to have it done (around NC at least) if it hasn't, you should also have the thermostat replaced (about $18 from Toy Dealer) and is easily done with the timing belt/ water pump.

You should also ask whether the diff fluid and has been changed at all and check the rear tires on the inside to see if their is any gear oil due to failed axle seals

If any of these haven't been done, you can use that to bring the price down

Good luck

All the typical used car stuff mentioned above. X2 on taking a look at the rear axle seals. Check the steering rack for excessive play, worn out bushings. Check braking for vibration which is typically warped front rotors.

Absolutely check the above listed but another thing to check is the CV boots, are they leaking or torn? 4WD operation and indicator. Take it to a dirt lot, engage the 4WD in hi and lo. Turn right to the wheel lock, drive a full circle slowly then left to wheel lock and repeat. Listen for any noises, clicks etc. Make sure you get the dash gage indication of 4WD engaged. I lost mine and the truck would not engage 4WD and it was over $300 to get replaced.

I think if I had to do it all over again,I would crawl under it and look at the inside of the frame, they can rust in the same place as the taco's do.

have the Vin run by a yota shop and see if the recalls and maintenance have been done by any Toyota dealers.

98s had the spring recall I believe.
