You don't need to drop the VB, just the ATF filter. It would be a good idea to check the filter anyway.

This is Toyotas ECT (Electronically Controlled Transmission) automatic. It is used in both 22RE (4wd) models and in the 3VZ-E and 22R-TE (both 2wd and 4wd)

1st 2.804, 2nd 1.531, 3rd 1.000, 4th 0.705 Reverse: 2.393.

The 4WD version (A340H) has a transfer case with low-range gearing of 2.659:1

Models designated A340F have (I think) the VF2A transfer case with a 2.566:1 low range

Someone who asked to be anonymous sent the following info:

The codes breakdown is as follows

A 340 H

A = automatic transmission
3 = 3 series
4 = 4 speed
0 = gear ratio / minor change
H = hydraulic transfer case (includes ECT)
F = mechanical transfer case (includes ECT)
E = Electronic Controlled Transmission (used on 2WD 4Runners, other 2WD Toyota vehicles)

This transmission uses 2 solenoids to control the shifting.

solenoid 1 solenoid 2
1 th = ON OFF
2 nd = ON ON
3 rd = OFF ON
4 th = OFF OFF

The throttle cable is used for line pressure, it can be disconnected and
the transmission will still shift normally.

But if you loose power to your 2 shift solenoid, you will be taking off in
OverDrive.

Yes thanks--the toyota guy also stated that maybe a Cable could be out of adjustment and may be causing it?? Is that a possibility?

Hmm so a 50/50 shot of what solenoid is bad.

hey guys i have the same problem with my 99 limited runner... except i get a check engine light when it gets real bad... my fluid and filter have maybe 2k miles to work and back since the last change so i know its still good. mines to the point now to where i have to put it in LOW everytime i come to a stop. had the cell pulled and it was "shift solenoid A electrical"... the guy who i talked to said that one or both of my solenoids are about to take a crap... so i went today and picked up a set of both solenoids today for $130... cheaper to buy 2 in a package than a single one for $109... im just going to replace them both...

its a PTW part the store said so i dont know what that means or where they ordered it from, but the part number is PTW52-0230. it comes with a few different mounting brackets for a few different trannies. if i remember right i believe it shows for 3 different toyota transmissions. but the runner is back to shifting normal! dont have to look like an idiot anymore shifting the automatic. i hope this helps you guys

That's great to hear! I'll have to add this to my list of things to do.
