I wonder if Jason B. can get them for you. You may want to ask him if he is able to get them. I asked if he could for my 92, as I would rather deal w/ him than EBAY.
It doesn't hurt to ask. :fireman:

I would think about getting them if I could paint the red part on it. Make it look a bit like a 3rd gen. Has anybody done this? Somebody a while ago mentioned that butnut has done this. Butnut, did you do that, or am I mixed up with somebody esle? (looks like you have a 3rd gen now)
Anybody know where I could get them besides ebay? I'd like to compare prices.
Have fun all.

Yeah, I did my lowers in red. This was before the 2001? tails with the super clear tops came out. I painted a 2nd gen clear tails for someone. I used NAPA's Candy Apple Red as it's totally transparent and I clearcoated in high gloss clear lacquer. For the 2nd gen, it looks awesome and trick...instead of the amber tops. From what I understand ALL clear tails are illegal and have been discontinued by all companies. Ebay may be the only way to get them...ask Jason.

Woohoo! I think I just won a pair! I just hope I did everything right. Never done anything on ebay before. It was fun!
Was anybody else here bidding?
Now for the paint and high gloss thiner. Does the gloss stuff come in a spray can or do I apply it with a brush? How close is the Candy Apple Red color to the original color? Thanks for the info butnut!

Lacquer 'spray' paint may still be available at NAPA. I know lacquer is slowly being phased out for environmental reasons (mostly auto, not furniture) so good luck in finding it. I bought the only can of red they had. Clear seems plentiful. I masked the top part, and scuffed the area to paint, lightly with a white 3M Scotchbrite pad. Candy apple is built up in layers/coats. ALWAYS spray light coats. Do one tail, match color to next. Go back and forth making sure each tail gets the same coats. Let flash dry between coats. Don't go heavy. Light even coats. The more coats, the more red/darker it gets. Stop when it looks the proper shade. Let it dry, and give a few coats of clear gloss LACQUER. Final coat can be wet for gloss. Let dry at least a few days-week. Can be buffed out. Let me know if you need anymore help. I find I need to use Japan red bulbs as the stock clears don't look red enough.
Good luck.

It MUST be Candy Apple Red lacquer. It's transparent, meant to be shot over a silver or gold base color, it's the only clear red you can use. I found a can of Japan red tail light spray, but it was 20 bucks for a tiny can, and it's the same thing. The darkness of red is determined by how many coats you spray. The color builds with each coat. You MUST spray light even coats, drying a few minutes between. A heavy coat will look ugly, take your time and it can look perfect. Lacquer dreis quick and looks dull. The final clear will be shiney if sprayed 'wet' and can be buffed when fully cured.

Hey all! Those are some SWEET taillights. I can't wait to get mine painted and put on. For those who are curious, my runner is light blue. The clear part should blend in good with my paint though.
Now, after seeing mangoango's pic, I don't know how I'm going to paint them. I was thinking about doing it just like those but without the red trim around the turnsignal. Now I don't know because it looks great with the red trim. I hadn't thought about doing that until now. I may stick with painting them without the trim. Would blend better with my color rig and be easier to paint.
That sure does look good though.
I wanted to make sure I was heading the right track on the painting thing. What I use to paint the light is called Candy Apple Red high gloss clear lacquer, right? Or are those two different things that I apply (paint and then lacquer)? Sorry, I was starting to get a bit confused.
Thanks you all.
Have fun.

DH6, lacquer is what you want. It's the only transparent finish with color. Candy Apple. You can clearcoat with a high gloss urethane or clear lacquer. Nice detail Mango. Looks like the 3rd gen. The 2nd gen tail I painted just went straight across like the stock.

Thanks again. The lights came in the mail a couple days ago. Yippe!
I went to Pep Boys, and they had bright red laquer. That's the only redish color I could find anywhere.
It was called classic laquer though. I don't know if there is any difference between classic and non-classic.
I'll look around on the web some, and maybe Sherwin Williams has some.
What color paint did the rest of you use?
What's this silver bulb mod I've heard about? Does the bulb still let out the same amount of light, and what kind of paint do I use for that?
Sorry about all the questions. You all have been a great help already.
Have fun.

Here are a few photoshopped pics of when I had my 2nd gen. I was just experimenting one day since I couldn't get hold of clear tailights. I never got the chance to actually try out the talights.
Can somebody tell me what kind of grill guard this is:
