Cig Lighter/Ashtray Light Problem

Hey all,

Happy Holidays! I had my dash apart yesterday installing a new ground on my headunit. Put it all back together and the lights around the cig. lighter and inside ashtray (not that i use it but...) are not working. They were working before, so I know I [censored] something up.

I took it all back apart and checked the wiring as far back as I could, and everything looks connected. I checked both fuse boxes in the truck. Can't find any bad ones.

Anybody have any advice for me?

This is a 97 4Runner.

Thanks,
Chris

Does your clock work? I had a similar problem with my 2nd gen and the clock, the ashtray light, and the cig lighter didn't work for a while. The clock kinda faided in and out a bit at first too. I checked my fuses and everything seemed ok. I posted about here a bit ago, and somebody said to try and bend the contacts on the fuse a bit, so they make a better connection in the fuse box. I did that, and it works great now! Yippee!

I had removed my dash a bit ago and put it back real quick because I had to make a run into town for something. I didn't bother with wiring my hazards up. Well, I noticed that the turn signals weren't working. I guess my turn stalk is wired to the hazards, which is then wired to my turn signals. I'm not sure how 3rd gens are wired, but I wonder if your sig lighter and ashtray light were wired to your radio. Since you unplugged your radio and gave your new one a different ground, your other stuff may not be working because they don't have a ground. I dunno. Just brainstorming here.

Anyways, sorry for rambling on there. I suppose that may not have been much help, but though I'd mention it anyways.

Have fun.

Same thing happened to me when I took the dash off for the voltmeter install.

Bulb stopped working, replaced it with a new one. Worked for another couple days and stopped working again. The first time was definitely a burnt bulb. This time it's probably just a loose connection, but too lazy to take the dash apart right now.

Thanks for the help. The clock, hazards, and defroster, and stereo are all working fine. And, the cig lighter has power to it. It's just the lights that are out on both of them.

Not a huge deal, but it just irks me that I obviously screwed it up!

Thanks for any ideas!

Anyone had this problem out there? Is there another fuse in the line or something I didn't find?

Thanks again!

Did you check the bulbs? As referred to in my post, they seem to die easily...?
