Chrome bumpers rusting....options to go all black?
I want to replace my chrome bumpers with black ones keeping it stock looking. If I buy bumpers off e-bay should I have them painted by a body shop?

The carpartswholesale dealer on eBay are dirt cheap. They get you with the shipping, but, still pretty good.
I'd just buy the black ones and paint them yourself with some Krylon flat or semigloss. They come out great if you get them in black since they just need a rub down with some acetone and you're good to go.

IF you buy another factory bumper wont that also just rust away? i'd look into the Big Country Customs, they make rear bumper that look factory but could take on the toughest trail.

If you get yourself in sandwiched in a highway accident that isn't your fault your insurance should be able to replace to pesky rusted out bumpers with nice new shiny ones. 8)

Just go to a junkyard and get one. Or if yours is still saveable sand all the rust off it and paint it.

It's just the back one that rusted a hole through. Also when I got the truck, there was a dent in one of the corner pieces of the bumper. If not e-bay for a black bumper, does anyone have a old chrome one that they removed that is not rusted that they want to part with?? Who else would carry something decent.
I am gonna just sand, prep and paint the front one to save money. Anyone do a write up on that lately and how did it work out??
Thanks.

I don't know about your year, but for the '99 SR5 the only bumper that fits on the sides in the rear is chrome. (I'm not sure about the center, the black might work there.) The flares and trim on the rear sides of my SR5 don't match up with the black bumpers. My e-bay chrome replacements are rusting after one winter so this summer they are getting painted or rhinocoated or powder coated or something.

I'm in the same boat right now with my bumpers. All of the powdercoaters that I have spoken with cannot guarantee that powdercoat will stick to chrome over the long term. I think the cheapest and best solution is to just buy all of the bumpers on Ebay in black/non-chrome as mentioned, and have them powdercoated front and back. For those of us in the rust belt, I would recommend something like POR15 for the backside as well.
