heres my problem. Randly my CEL will turn on and off.

It happened alot and 4 times i took it into the shop to get it checked it just turnned off.

I mean its really wierd that the car does this. ANy way of checking it myself. I have heard of the paperclip thing but no one has really explained it or maybe i just cant ifnd the thread.

But if anyone had pictures and what points i need to stick the paper clip in that would be great.

Go under the hood on the passenger side fender and locate a little box that says "diagnostic" on it. open this cover on the box and notice on the underside of the cover it has the diagram. put a paperclip in TE1 and E1 thats labeled on the underside of the cover. Get in and turn the key to the "ON" position...not the accessory position...and watch how many times the check engine light blinks. if it has a pause...like blinks twice...pause...then blinks 5 times...thats a code 25. no pauses and its a single digit code.

can i do this now or do i have to wait for the light to come on again.

I been really mad at wasting my time to drive my car to a shucks, autozone, midas, sears and having the damn light turn off on me.

gets annoying but thanks for the info. Ill try it when it turns on again.

You can do it now....the ECU stores every code and it will play every code. As long as noone disconnects the battery it will be stored....otherwise that erases the codes. just get you a piece of paper and pen handy...because it could be more than one code.

is it flashing or just going on and off?


where are you located? im sure some members here have OBD II scanners

I have a 95 4runner and i dont think it has a OBD port.

I live in bellingham, Washington.
