Is this truck worth it?

Im thinking of buying a 1991 toyota pickup, it is bone stock and has...

4x4
22re
5 speed
regular cab.

It needs some work, but it runs. the big problems are..

burns oil (bad rings)
clutch,
all 4 brakes (rotors and pads)
cracked muffler

Im only looking for something to take camping/hunting/fishing and all around boonie craching.

the only thing that realy worries me is the rings. I have never worked on the internals like this before, and know nothing about the 22re. I have worked on alot of old chevy stuff (350cid) and i worked on my ls1 camaro (cam swap, and alot of other mods. Anyway, im not affrade to work on it, i just dont know anything about this type of vehical (4 banger/4x4).

I think it has about 150k on it, but the motor was rebuilt about 20k ago
I can pick it up for $1000 and after looking around the web at parts im thinking about $750 to get it running like a champ (with me doing all the work).

I Know there are no hidden problems as i have been friends with the seller for a long time.

what do you guys think go for it , or not?

thanks,

Eric

When he had it rebuilt 2 of the rings had to be replaced withing a few hundred miles. they must have been deffective. Ran fine for a while, then he gave the truck to his sister, and she didnt keep up on the maintnance and didnt say anything about alittle smoke out the tailpipe. when she finaly did say something the warrenty on the rebuild was up. after that he took the truck back and its now for sale

pulling the pistons, might as well do the whole set. make sure there's still a good crosshatch.

may as well rebuild the engine if it needs a ring job -- it's not that much more involved. the only labor that involves is replacing the main bearings(easy) and re-sealing the timing cover etc. you can get a rebuild kit from engnbldr for a little over $200.

Id go for it. You never know what may come up and bite you in the ass like if you have to fix/replace something major soon, but for 1000 bucks and its only a strait up rig I'd do it. As long as you do all the rings and nothing else is messed up and it has not been overheated once or twice or something then it should run good and take you till 250,000+ miles. Good Luck.

there is a lot of stuff you might as well put back new since you will have the engine literally totally torn apart.
Put in as much new parts as you can afford to.
and as I have recently learned the value of, use high temp antisieze on EVERY bolt and nut. I keep a little tube in my wrench bag.
Ive never torn one down, but Ive watched many done growing up. If you think you shouldn't reuse an old half worn part and you do, 9 times out of 10 you'll regret not getting a new one while it was "easy" to put in.
I wont pretend to know whats in a 22re, I have to learn that too. But some rules apply to fixing everything;
don't be cheap, it always ends up being very expensive.
clean it, then clean it again before you put it back together.
and absolutely first off get the best manual you can find.

its only $1000 bucks, at worst you can only learn how NOT to do it with the second $1000 truck!
(plus you'll have a lot of spare parts.... lol)
