i was driving back from the mall and i noticed the CEL came on or was on. I have no idea what is going on it feels fine.

I have 127K miles on it and i was wondering if anything usually goes out at that many miles.

 

Might need to put on a new Head Gasket.

Your first step is to get the CEL read. You can have this done for FREE at an AutoZone, Schucks, etc. Most any auto parts store.

Once you do that, bring the code back to here and we'll help you out.

It makes no sense to hypothesize or speculate (could be hundreds of things), get the CEL code number and post back so we can be of help.

Always.

There are two stages of engine trouble codes. Some of them show when the first error is found, others won't show until the same thing happens a couple of times. If you didn't do anything to "fix" the problem (given that we don't know what it _is_ - not _was_) then the problem is still there. As such, the ECU could be "holding" a code waiting for the next event before it shows it. A reader will be able to tell you that.

_WHEN_ the light goes on again, drive to a parts store and get them to read it. It'll take less than 5 minutes.

i went to the Auto Zone and the result was a bad O2 sensor and that it was running lean. so i need a new O2 sensor and i was wondering if i can replace it myself and how much i should be looking to spen on it

 

Do you have the actual code number?

 

If it is your O2 sensor, get the code and find out if its the front (pre-Cat) or rear one (post-Cat). Most likely its the front one - P0171 was my code. Those seem to go more often for me (happened twice on a Camry @90K and 180K - once on the 4Runner at 92K)

Order the new O2 sensor from URD (under $100 for non CA) or see if its locally avaialble and install it yourself. Took me more time to find the right sized wrench than to actually change out my O2 sensor.

 

um its a california car so does that mean it will cost more

 

A 1999 CA spec vehicle? Yes, possibly.

Did you get the actual code number that was pulled? We need it to tell if it's the FRONT O2 sensor or the REAR. They're probably not the same on your truck.

And yes you can change it yourself. You'll looking at either a $90 part or a $140 part.
