I have a 97 4runner v6 2wd with a check engine light that keeps coming on. It shows a code 0446 something to do with the evaporative system I guess. I already changed the gas cap and it still comes on. Any ideas or suggestions would be great. Has anybody had this problem? I have seen lots of questions online but no solutions, except for the gas cap.

 

Charcoal canister? Sounds like its time to start testing problematic areas.

Posting up a check engine code is sorta like searching the net for answers, and only coming up with more questions. All anyone will be able to tell you is what the book says 0446 code means, especially since it can be a number of things causing the code.

 

You will need to take it to a shop. We have an EVAP smoke machine that will pin point exactly where the leak is coming from. This can be a lot of things, charcoal cannister, vent solenoid, purge valves, and FTPS. I'm speaking from experience w/ GM vehicles but Toyota's may be similar.
