check or Check Engine

check or Check Engine
We're driving our 1998 4 runner SR4 on a long trip and the car is driving perfectly as always when the dashboard indicates the word "check." We stop immediatly and open up the manual. There appears to be a distinction between "check engine" and the word "check". It appears to be a different light. When I looked closer the message it appears that it may have something to do with a type of service required. The message came on at 78,000. We opened the hood and checked the oil and it was clean and full having only been just a day earlier. We decided to drive on and went another 150 miles. The light went off and never came back on and the car always ran well.
Anyone familiar with this "check" message.
