Center brake light - Pickup

My '93 lacks one. I saw another regular cab pickup with the same graphic, same steel wheels, and it had the center light. Did they add it in a certain year? I thought the third brake light was mandated for all vehicles in 1986...

Not sure about the Yota P/U's but I know that there are a few '95 Runners around here that don't have the light while I do...not sure what package it came with though.

I think it may have depended on

where your vehicle was originally sold and / or the birthday of your vehicle . my friends 92 had it and my 94 does but these were canadian market trucks and the rules are different. The thing just bolted on to the roof of the cab with a 2 screws. the wire to feed it ran under the headliner. ( i think it went to the cab light on the xtra cab and was bundled there with the other wires going to the fuse block. so if you really want one it would probably be easy to throw on. Cheers Aviator
Ps so far as the mandate thingy the rules for trucks are different to the rules for cars. Like trucks did'nt used to have to have damn air bags but since the 95 model year ^#$^*^air bags are in. Thank god i don't have one.

My 91 sr5 did not come with one. My buddies 94 did. I bought one off wimpywade's taco and it mounted right up. just rob one off a doner rig and hook it up.

Hey question for you Jim. A while back in one of my 4wd mags I saw in readers rides what looked to be a late 80s to early 90s yota truck but it said it was an 84. Did the 89-95 style body go that far back?

It's an odd thing... Why make two roofs? Seems like if a Canuck '92 would have it, my US '93 would. A couple of you mentioned that yours bolted on, and it could simply be added, but the '90-'95 trucks I have seen with it have a little hump at the back of the roof with the light in it. Mine has no hump...

im pretty sure if you have one, you can just unbolt it. if i had something to put in its place, a thin cover and bolt it up to cover the exposed area, i'd take mine off.

In the US, it was required on all light duty trucks for model year 1994 and later, although some manufacturers adopted them earlier

I think they were required up here a little earlier. The thing is just a plastic box screwed to the roof so it should be easy to add if your hot to have one. I saw a regular cab 89-95 model last night and it did'nt have the light so either it was a pre-3rd light model or they did'nt put them on reg cabs. Cheers aviator

Well, there it is then. The truck I saw must have been a '94 or '95. I knew someone had the answer...

94 was the first year. I bought the last 93 on a dealers lot (Nov 30th 93) because I didn't want a 94 with the brake light. On the early 94's the brake light housing wasn't even paint body color, it was just gray. But by mid 94 through mid 95 (and the introduction of the Tacoma) the housing was painted body color to look a little less obtrusive.

I was just about to say that, and 1986 on passenger cars.

Yep - that matches my memory. I bought my '93 without one, and I recall the third light being stock on the next year's models. Prior to '94 I seem to recall a cab-mounted 'bed light' being an option bundled with some of the optional trim packages. This was just a basic white light for illumination - it wasn't tied into the brakes. I could be wrong, but I want to say my '85 SR5 XtraCab had a cab-mounted bed light....
