Whats up - I have been trying to find info on the Magnaflow 43000 replacement CAT Converters, but have come up empty handed. I have a California Emissions 4Runner (1999) and I need new CAT's. I am going to go stock unless I can get feedback on the Magnaflow CAT's. There listed as replacements for California Spec trucks? I need to know how true that is - will I still get a CEL?

Already replaced the A/F Sensor and cleaned my MAF.
I do have that eggy smell so my CAT's are def. bad.

 

Just know in advance that the odds of your cat converter quest going smoothly are slim to none...I had a heck of a time with mine.

Thankfully, I had a Cali spec 4Runner but I didn't live in Cali so I just chopped both of mine off, put on a High-Flow Magna and an O2 Sim and I was set.

With you still living in Cali this could get a little more tricky.

Click here for the list of all the different cats they have listed under the 43000 series - I'm assuming you've seent his. Find out which particular model you need -- you could try a search on here and see if I have it listed anywhere when I did it -- then go to JEGS.com and search for "Magnaflow (part number)" and they should have it. I did a few spot checks on various ones listed on that site and they all came up. They ain't cheap though!

I never thought about doing it that way. What kind of SIM should look for?

I kind of feel a little sketchy doing a SIM, I would rather just put a new exhaust and/or Cats on if I knew they would work.

It is amazing the amount of time I have spent trying to figure this out. Either I am a complete idiot or the info just isn't out there?

 

nobody makes affordable aftermarket Cali cats.

california air resources board has tight
controls on who gets to make a CARB approved cat. guess what ?
only OEM, no one else. unless by magic you can find one. they have to pass
stringent testing... meaning they will flow exactly as oem and have the
same honeycomb and metals. 48 other states don't care.

the ecu and all emissions in a cali. vehicle depend on everything meeting
the same spec. which is tighter than aftermarket can provide...so it is very
rare for anyone to make an aftermarket cat. for cali.

 

Thats what I was figuring, I guess I am going to bite the bullet.
At least - I will have my Indy Mech put it in, that should save some coin.

Search "Catalytic Converter Stolen" and look for my post with the Magnaflow part #. It is listed for a Tacoma, but fits the 4runner. I can't remember the part # off the top of my head...

 

Absolutely go with URD. Great product, great support. I had mine tucked up next to the ECU and there is no way anybody would have had any idea it was there, I forgot it was there until somebody mentioned it on here.

Install took a soldering gun, solder, wire cutters, tape and about 15 minutes. Just take as much time as you need, measure/think twice cut once...

I just read your entire post about your Cat issues!!! I thought I was having trouble....
I like the idea of the simulator.... I am going to think about it.
My mech said he found a new setup that will work with our cali trucks and dual cats. I will call him tomorrow and find out what company makes it. He said it will be a lot less than OEM.

Just for shirts and giggles I called the dealer for a quote to replace everything with OEM........
$212 - Labor
$174 - Pipes
$1173 - Rear Cat
$1002 - Front

Thats without and sensors!!!!

 

Anything that gets done to my truck gets done at the dealership...minus anything exhaust related.

Seeburg has been good to me here in NWA.

It will be interesting to see what your mechanic has found for you, be sure to post up the details of what it entails.

And yeah, trust me man, my exhaust issues were a much bigger PITA than yours will be...at least we hope!

i want to know how this works out too, when i install my headers i am going to get a high-flow cat as well but i don't have a cail-spec truck.

If it's not cali-spec as long as you keep the new cat in the stock location you should be fine.

So - I ended up going with the setup my mech. found. It came to $1300 with 2 new cats and a downstream o2 and gaskets ..etc..etc
I asked him what kind of cats he used and didn't know. He told me he thinks they were OEM because they looked a felt exactly the same as what he took off and he got them through a import specialist distributor. I drove it around town all day and I haven't thrown a CEL and the sound and feel is 10 times better.
I will keep you guys updated....

The way i see it i will get that and if it doesn't work i will then get the sim. But i think I am going ot get a 3" model. that should allow it to flow even better with my headers also being 3" then behind that i can run 2.5" or 3" depending on what i feel like. Either way should flow better than stock.
