I have a 2000 LTD 4Runner with stock 16" wheels and 265-75-16 tires.


I was planning to do a 3" lift and get 16" rockcrawlers (or something along those lines to help with offset/rubbing issues) with bigger tires (285/75-16). However, from what I have been gathering on this board, getting bigger wheels will require doing "gears".

I know this is probably a super-n00b question, but could someone please clarfiy the following for me:

- What gears are these, and where do they get installed?
- How do the "gears" remedy the fact that the wheels are now bigger/heavier?
- How do the gears affect gas mileage?
- How involved is the installation? Is it a DYI, or should I have a professional handle it?
- What are the costs?

if you dont know what gears are then it is not a diy project. leave it to the pros... they are differential ring and pinion gears... they make the change in tire size close to the performance of stock or whatever you gear for more acceleration or top speed.

 

Where are these gears located, and about how much am I looking at spending for both parts & labor?

 

they are located in you front and rear axles, and expect to pay around $1000-1500 to have a different ratio installed

I don't think you need to re-gear for that small of tire change.
With a 3" lift, the truck might look a bit funny with such small rubber.

You think 285/75/16 tires are too small for a 3" lift?

 

NO..285/75's are perfect. I did regear. However, it wasn't necessary. Drive it with the bigger tires first, see how you notice the power loss. Where are you located? I can likely recommend a shop.

 

I am in Bay Area, CA. Haven't had a chance to find a shop or research pricing yet, so if you know of a good (read: honest) shop out here, I'd gladly check it out.

 

Sorry. When I hear norcal I think above the bay area. But if you ever get into the foothills, there are many great shops. 4x4labs, GearedUP Drivetrain (whom I used), Inchworm (I think).....and the list goes on.

 

WFO Concepts is another good shop in the foothills (Auburn)

I can say now, that if you goto Auburn, DO NOT visit Foothill Offroad. I was quoted over $3k for a regear to 4.88's with a rear ARB. Of course, I'd need a new "rear case". :pat:

They are some buddies of a buddy of mine from High School, they all went to Chico together majoring in Fabrication. After college they opened up shop so they are relatively new but it's their "freshness" that makes their shop so awesome. They have a lot of knowledge and a lot of passion for what they're doing.
