I never had to work much on the electrical before, problems always seemed to be mechanical in nature. But now I have an A/C fan, at least that is what I believe it is, that turns on intermittently. For example, it comes on when i slam the door too hard or go over a bump in the road or what have you. I ended up just pulling the relay for the damn thing cuz I don't use the A/C anyways.

This is the enclosed fan just behind the grill in the 2nd gen. Now, when I got my rig back from the stealer for an oil change, there was a fan belt sitting in the passenger seat, something they had forgot to mention to me...I went back in and talked to the guy and he told me that that was the belt for the A/C compressor, and it was all tore up cuz the fan and that particulaar pulley have to be sinked up to work properly and that it was tore up because that fan was not on. Thing is, is that I never have the A/C on, so how could that happen. he told me it would be about $200 plus labor to fix the fan (...i mean replace the fan). Said it was grounding internally and there is no way to correct that without replacing.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Does this sound right?

 

uhh, I'm a little confused. Assuming it's the fan just behind the glove compartment, I'd say it's okay to leave the relay disconnected if you don't need it. Just replace the motor when you do need it. Shouldn't be hard to do, and a used one should be readily available somewhere.

If you're talking about a fan that blows on or through the radiator, you need that fan and motor in good working condition!!

 

This fan is between the grill and the radiator.

 

Maybe I'm just not familiar with the 4runner design. Is the electric fan the only one for the radiator, or does the engine have another one?

 

The electric fan is a direct replacement for the stock fan that turns with the engine, thus creating less drag and more HP. The fan I speak of is some sort of coolant fan for the AC.

 

I know what you are talking about. I've noticed that it only turns on when the compressor kicks on. As for ground or something like that, I dunno . If they say the problem is the fan, then you may just want to buy a fan and replace it yourself. It would save you a little money.

 

Yes, there is a small electric fan between the grill and radiator that is the A/C condensor fan. It blows air over the condensor to drive off the heat that your A/C pulls from the inside of your truck. It should be controlled by a temperature sensor in the freon loop. What I'm not clear on is how this electric fan could have casued a fan belt to break. Unless the belt that broke is the compressor belt and the compressor froze up? As far as the "grouding internally" issue, that is possible. Something is completing the circuit to turn it on. It also could be the temperature sensor that kicks it on is faulty and closing at the wrong time. If that sensor is shot, you still would have the problem if you replaced the electric fan.

Problem is, I don't know if I can do it myself because it has some hard lines going into it. I don't wanna start tinkering with it and make it worse or have some freon come flying out into my face or what have you.:pat:

I'm sure I can find the fan at a local salvage yard, well I better find it there, as the stealer wants $200 plus labor to fix it. El Bastardos.

So one one else has had a similar problem before? Guess I get to be the guinnea pig again for a new prob.

 

So the fan has some lines running into it? That seems odd to me. I haven't looked at mine that close to know if it does.

Try 1st Toyota Parts. So far they have the cheapest prices of all the discount Toyota parts sites that I have found.

 

I'd also make sure that the A/C compressor is still ok. If you busted a belt, it could have seized up.
