Dale, on my '02, the temp sensor is on the passenger side of the tranny, near or at the bell housing. It looks similar to an O2 sensor. I confirmed it with my toy parts dealer.

FWIW, on my stock setup, the highest reading I've seen to date on my SGII was 217 degs ATF. However, that was while I was stopped for roughly 5-10mins while on an incline (a wreck had taken place at the top of the hill and traffic was moving ever so slowly). I had the gas pedal depressed slightly to keep the truck from rolling backwards, rather than using the brake. Temps outside were also pushing 90 degs.

Thanks for the info.

The difference is the 4454 is only .75" thick and the 70264 is 1.5" thick so it has double the surface area. Because of this its able to stay in contact twice as long with every CFM of air that goes through it. Its like comparing a one row to a double row radiator.

Awesome, thanks. I'm going to replace mine with the B&M and put in a new fan clutch.

On the fan clutch, don't waste your money at the dealer. Go get the Hayden brand from Oreilly auto with the lifetime warranty.

Anyone here try a cooler like the B&M 70274? The thing looks pretty big and I guess I would never need to worry about the tranny overheating anymore? Or is a giant cooler like this just a stupid idea?

I do agree with everyone that the Tru-Cool 4454 does seem too small for our 4Runners. I'm pretty sure that the ATF got pretty hot last month when I went off-roading down a steep road into a valley and back up at very slow speeds.

I've got a TruCool in my 4Runner, and plan on getting a Scangauge II as soon as I can afford it. I want to see what my fluid temps are like now that it's officially summer in Texas. . . Since my truck is a 4x2 however, I never take it wheeling, so it won't see the same sort of stresses that you guys do. Even so, I want to know how the 4454 performs doing stop and go when it's about 120* on the roads.

Where is the best location for installing a Tranny temp gauge? Should I install before or after the coolers to determine if my tranny temp is good? Knowing the outlet temp of the ATF is good but don't you want to know if its been cooled or not? and to what level? Understand wanting the temp on the output to know what the tranny is putting out. Just want to be sure I am locating it in the right spot.

Getting ready to buy new hoses for my set up using two tranny coolers off Ford Explorers. Want to install the temp gauge first to give myself a baselline for the temp BEFORE I hook up the coolers. Also I do not have a clutch fan anymore, I did the Taurus electric fan mod to my truck like 3 years ago right after I bought it. I know my radiator is really efficient (another story) but it doesn't turn on unless the radiator temp goes above 185 degrees, so if I bypass the radiator cooling coils it will be feeding the twin tranny coolers I have installed but there will only be air flow when the vehicle is moving. Really isn't much room left ot install a secondary cooling fan.

Speaking of hoses, what size hose do I need to replace the hoses going from the tranny to the radiator? Need to know what size fits on the output and input hard pipes., thanks guys

Depending on how much the gauge costs, just get a scanguage, it reads from inside the tranny, scans CEL's and a whole bunch more... I have mine, and love it.

I thought SGII only works for 99+ on those readings? Otherwise I would have gotten one.

Correct. Only '99 and up 4Runners output an ATF reading the SGII can discern.

Yukon, Ritzy owns a '98 4Runner. Therefore, the SGII is not an option for him concerning ATF temps. He'll have to go another route.

Anyone come up with any solution for a temp gauge? I have a couple old coolers from mid 90's explorers just like Ritzy, but am waiting to do anything to come up with some idea for a temp gauge. It seems pointless to do a mod like this without having any way of measuring the pre/post temps.

See post #31 of this thread.

Make sure the sensor doesn't block flow too much.

Add a remote oil filter mount and you can add the sensor into it. The brake line mount on the passenger side inner frame is the perfect location to bolt the filter mount to. Extends your transmission fluid life even longer, too.

Midget I see a serious problem with your transmission filter install.......... you used a Fram filter

BTW I've always wondered, who is the lady in your avatar?

That's definitely not permanent! I only put the Fram on there for initial startup; I had the trans completely apart and who knows what kind of funk will come out in the first few hundred miles. Going to a Purolator Pure One after a month.

Summit. Permacool mount with 4 1/2" NPT bungs.

You can use it with AN fittings or barbs, but now that I think of it, where I mounted it is right were the metal hardlines run under the starter. This setup won't work for you if you're still using the stock hardlines and trying to add a cooler cheaply.

Have the B&M installed today. Also added the TRD TB Gasket...

Also, here's some info regarding the B&M Coolers....

70255 11x5 3/4x 3/4 9800 BTU Tranny Fluid
70268 11x7 1/4x 3/4 13000 BTU Tranny Fluid
70264 11x5 3/4x 1 1/2 14000 BTU Tranny Fluid *** What we're using*** Sit this on top of the 4454 and the 4454 is 6 fins wider, though the B&M is twice as thick. I trust Fog in how it works. I'll know today, I'm going on a road trip to Homer.

70273 11x5 3/4x 1 1/2 15000 BTU Tranny, Engine Oil, Diff, Power Steering, Turbo Oil
70266 11x8x1 1/2 20500 BTU Tranny, Engine Oil, Diff, Power Steering, Turbo Oil
70274 11x11x1 1/2 29200 BTU Tranny, Engine Oil, Diff, Power Steering, Turbo Oil

Good info Psraff! Keep us posted on how the 70264 works out for you. I plan to swap out my 4454 for the b&m 70264 in the near future as well
