build a bumper
hey guys, so i've got this idea that i want to build a bumper from scratch for my 4runner. Has anybody else attempted this that might be able to give me some advice? thanks

I have a home-made bumper. I didn't make it, it was a PO design. It ain't real pretty, but it's HIGHLY funtional. I've had no success trying to rip it from the frame. It's designed for the body lift(3"), and it's tubing, that's my advice too, and good welds.

Getting ready to do a front bumper myself. Got a Buddie that's a nuke plant welder and hes going to do the welding for me. but here's what I be using for the the material
8"x 1/4" box steel
1/4" flat steel
6" round tube (for inside the bumper to hold air for airing back up tires)
and 1/4 " flat for making brackets
gonna do it right on the runner so it fits like it was made that way soon as we get started on it Ill use my new digital camera and send you some pic and ill try to wright down all the dimensions for you if your interested

Here is mine.
Got some rectangle 3/16" tube as well as a bunch of 3/16" plate from the remnants bin at the local metal supply. Maybe $75 in materials and various welding supplies, grinder wheels, spray paint. My welding leaves lot's to be desired... but I am getting better. Will probably grind it all down and smooth it out in the future.
Was a lot cheaper than custom. What it lacks in aesthetics it makes up for in brawn... which is what I need my bumper to do anyway.
