Ok well i know i have to break in my gears in my front diff. For my rear diff i had to take it easy for about 500 miles. But since i have a fully manual differential, and manual hubs how should i go about breaking in my gears properly? Its completely dry here, so i dont want to run it in 4HI on the dry pavement, and i dont think i can do 500 miles on a dirt road. So what does everyone suggest i do about the break in?

When I had my gears installed I was told 500 easy miles then change the fluid. I was told 4 good wheelin' trips should be fine for the front then change the fluid but I did 4 all day trips and 3 little trips before I changed the fluid. Everythings running good.

EDIT: During the all day trips I would wheel then rest and let things cool down, wheel then let things cool and so on. Just get the diff. hot and let it cool like you did with the rear.

 

lock the hubs but dont put in 4wd......that will get that diff spinnin

 

on roger brown's website, it says he just unbolted the rear driveshaft and put the truck in 4hi to drive around for the break-in period. i don't think the gears would break in right if there's no load(unlocked hubs) on them

 

Just locking the hubs will not do it.

I put it in 4wd and left the hubs unlocked so the diff was getting power but the wheels were not.

Short trips for 20 or so at low speeds. Get it hot then let it cool. Get the trips longer and faster slowly, feel the diff with your hand. Drain the gear oil at 500 and give it hell.

 

He did that because he had no rear driveshaft

 

Isn't that the same as just locking the hubs?? Instead of the groud turning the diff your driveshaft is??

ill put it in 4HI and drive around town slowly and let it cool off. and repeat the process until 500miles and change the fluid!
