Unhappy Brakes Locking Up

Hey guys, anyone ever experience this:

Light pressure on the brake pedal little to no friction, then suddenly with continued pressure, the brakes lock up. I think it is only on one side, because the rear end tends to slide to the left when it happens. I should mentionm, it's not as severe on clean pavement, but in snow it's downright dangerous. But even on clean, you can feel the brake catching very abruptly, yet I feel like I am applying almost no pressure to the pedal.

Could be a faulty caliper on whichever side its happening on.

gear oil on brakes from a blown axle seal will cause this. Try on gravel to determine which tire. This will help us diagnose. BTW what vehicle?

I'm going to put it up on the jacks this weekend, I was just wondering if it sounded like a familiar problem...

Oh, I fogot to mention (I suppose this is pretty major to have forgotten, actually, I think I just realized the problem myself...), My hand brake cable snapped right where it connects to the arm under the passenger side. I fixed it with a U clamp (the type you use to attach steel cable togther), but this effectively made it an inch shorter. Think it is possible that the cable is slightly actuating the Brake, so that is why I feel little resistance, the suddenly they lock up?
