Hey there. I searched for advice on which brakes to buy for my Taco, but I got lost in all the Tundra upgrade packages. I have the 15'' rims so it won't fit as far as I know, so I was looking for some advice on what to buy for the front brakes.

It's a 2000 2.7L 4x4 Tacoma, and I do mostly city and highway driving. Not much hills, so I don't need the heaviest duty brakes out there. Can someone guide me on what I need to purchase to do the front brakes. My dad will help me do them, but I need to buy the parts and I don't know which ones to go with.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would buy hawk LTS pads, not super heavy duty but good enough to stop your truck really well and they are only 50 bucks. Most people here swear by Hawk pads.

 

There is always the cheap option also. I put Auto Zone pads on my taco. They stop well, but can wear out quicker than other brands, they are also fairly dusty, BUT they are lifetime warranty, which translates to, you buy brakes at autozone. you pay full price. They wear out, you go to autozone buy new brakes, pay full price, put them on your rig, take the old brakes back to autozone, and they give you full price back. Effectively making brake pads free for as long as you own the rig. Its worth a few extra pad changes to me. (Especially as easy as it is on a Toyota, I can go from all four wheels on the ground to brakes done (fronts only) and all four back on the ground in under 25 minutes using all hand tools.

Now this may sound dumb, but do I need anything more than pads for the front? Any other parts that I need to buy?
Yes I'm new to this. I just changed my oil for the first time by myself last week.

FSM recomends new Anti-squeal shims. I haven't changed mine yet. You'll need the brake pads, some anti-squeal (bright red in a little squeeze bottle says brake quiet) and thats pretty much it. If you need any pointers or help, shoot me a PM, I;ve got a copy of the FSM and can walk you through, and help you out. Also - where are you located, you could be next door for all I know...

 

Get the Rotors Turned or buy New Rotors. Like Rocko Taco said its very easy to change out the front pads. just take your time. Be sure to get some brake cleaner and Brake grease, Youll need the grease to put it on the back of the brake pad shim.
