My 02 Runner is still a baby (9 months old and 15k miles). I've noticed something weird about brakes.. and yesterday, I noticed it more than I ever have before.
When it's hot/humid out (it was only about 80 degrees yesterday, but about 90% humidity) and I have the AC on, it seems like the brakes feel a little weak. It almost seems like "power" part of power brakes is not working as hard as it should be. I was coming to a traffic light and as I started pressing on the brake, the ABS kicked in and the only way for me to stop was to stay on the brake, so the ABS had to pump and release about 20 times before I came to a stop.
The road was 100% dry and I was not braking hard at all.. just normal gradual come to a stop.
Brake pedal feels fine, same as it did when I just got this truck (I've always found it to be too soft, but from reading the forums, it sounds like all 4runners without mods are like this).
I've adjusted rear brakes just a little while ago and it only takes 5 clicks for the ebrake to fully engage, so I know that's working fine. Fluid in brake reservoir is at the right level.
So.. what do you guys think? Should I be concerned? Anything I can/should check myself?
I will not go to the dealer unless I absolutely have no choice (I know I'll end up with more problems in the long run if I go to them.. I HATE those a-holes)

hey Erc-
when when was the last time you flushed your brake fluid? Have you checked your pads and shoes? You might wanna have a look and check for thickness and glazing (on your rotors). A good look at the system might pinpoint your problem. Or find a reputable shop that could check it (not yer stealership if you don't like them)

Your truck is still under warranty, so I would have the dealer check it out. Even if there is nothing wrong, at least you will have official documentation on record regarding a brake issue should a wreck ever occur.

 

That's exactly it! It's practically new! I'd be seriously pissed off if my pads/shoes needed to be replaced at only 15k miles!
I'll be rotating tires this Friday, so I'll give the pads and rotors a look, though I doubt they'll show much sing of wear. Think I should pull the drums and look at rear shoes while I'm at it?
It just really doesn't sound like the pads/shoes/rotors/drums are the culprit here.
