Brain dead service reps

I just had an interesting experience calling a Toyota dealer (City Toyota, Daly City, CA) to get a price on changing the diff. fluids/Tx case fluid. The service rep told me "$120...$60 a piece". I suspiciously asked if that included the transfer case, and he said "yes, the transfer case IS the front differential."

Uh huh.

Unless I'm completely losing it this morning, I thought for sure that a 4WD 4Runner had a front diff, rear diff, and a transfer case.

I didn't think I'd have the time or space to do that job myself, but maybe I should reconsider...

Just goes to show that service reps are just salespeople. I'm sure there are some really knowledgable service reps out there, but in my experience they are in the minority.

yeah just do it yourself. it will save you money. all are pretty easy to do. just go to the dealership and purchase the gaskets for the drain and fill plugs. i just finished up doing all of mine. it didn't take long at all.

Just make sure of one thing. The washers for the both plugs of the rear diff and fill plug of front diff are the same size, but not the drain plug. *%$#% parts deptartment was like "Oh, yeah, they'er all the same size." This after I needed to explain how the front differential and the transfer case are not the same thing! The transfer case plug are both the same size, but different from the diffs. :pat: Good luck!
