Last weekend I put a 4crawler 2" body lift on my 3rd gen, and I ran into an issue some folks might want to look out for. We were raising the body one side at a time with a frame lift, and when we were lifting the drivers side, I was really watching to ensure the steering rag joint seperated cleanly.

Well, I ended up lifting the body a little too much on the drivers side (about 4"), and not paying attention to the rear of the vehicle looking for hangups.

So after the install, the truck would crank but wouldn't start. The first crank, it hit, then stalled out and after that only cranking.

Any guesses what caused it?

The power lines to the fuel pump are on the top of the gas tank, and are accessable via a little removable panel under the drivers side back seat. A peek in there confirmed that I'd pulled several wires out of a harness that goes into the fuel tank.

There is enough wire to make the gap with a 2", but lifted up to 4" to mount them was enough to rip the wires out of the harness.

Ten minutes later, I was up and running again, after reassembling the harness, so no harm, no foul. Just posting this as a heads up for others who may run into the same problem.

Yeah, you gotta watch your height when lifting... go slow JHupp and just raise it up enough to clear the 2 inch spacer pucks. Good luck.... mine went in rather smoothly.

Oh, it went in super smoothly. In the shop it only took about an hour and a half, and that's including troubleshooting why it wouldn't start.

BTW, having a helper for the front bumper reinstall should be considered mandatory. Would have been almost impossible to get lit lined up without an extra set of hands.

 

a similar thing happened to me... after done, i started the truck and it didnt start very smoothly, stumbled, then died. turns out the intake hose had slid off of the throttle body and was partially blocking the intake. clamped it back on and all was good. just be aware of hoses/wires stretching when lifting a body of the frame.

 

i think a 2 inch body lift will be coming shortly

Damn you did great with time...mine took about 4 - 5 hours. I agree with the front bumper relocation issue... I did mine by myself and scratched the front bumper all up :pat:

 

Well, I had a helper, a garage, a hyrdraulic frame lift and lots of air tools at my disposal. PB blastering all of the bolts the night before no doubt helped to shave off some frustration and time. What took the longest was getting the steering extension in. Just kind of tough to get at that thing. But while I was messing with that, my helper was tacking all the carpet back down, and if not for the hangup with the fuel pump wires it would have been about as easy as a tire rotation and fluid change. Didn't bother with the radiator drop, just pulled the clips and dropped the lower shroud.

We looked at each other, and were like, "Well, I guess we're done?"

I must add though that all of the 4crawler hardware was quality stuff, especially the aluminum steering extension.

 

True that !! (in regards to the steering extension, and quality hardware)

I did the same thing with my lower radiator shroud, with no ill effects.
Now that I think about it...I wonder if I pulled something out doing my BL???? Reason is I recently did my suspension lift after my 2 inch BL and now getting a CHECK ENGINE light. My buddy did a reading on it, and the code had something to do with more air coming into the gas or something like that. My truck still runs fine though.

I think he is going to do a smoke test on it after they get their machine fixed.

Since you moved the body up two inches does the rear bumper look too low and is there a big 2" gap u can see if your looking into the wheel well from the side of the car? just wondering cuz im thinking about doing the 2" BL but i don't want my check engine light to go on or have any other mis haps. When i installed a 1" on my CJ i didn't have an engine light so all went well.

i don't need a diff drop for a 2" body lift do i?

 

not for a body lift, diff drops are needed for suspension lifts >2.5"

 

also remove the gas cap before doing a BL

 

I have found that you can use lots of old surfboards under your floor jack to get teh needed height to jack up the body from the frame...Wohoo!

The rear bumper is attached to the body and raises with the lift. The front bumper requires a bracket to adjust it to the proper height after the lift. 4crawler offers one with their kits.

It's more like the vacation capital of world. Traffic gets to be a hassle in the summertime. Most of the locals in my immediate area are somehow affiliated with the military.
