I'm doing my '97 2wd (4 cylndr) with 94K right now (head gasket), hopefully it will run $80 for the gasket kit and another $40 - $60 in replacement hoses, belts, antifreeze, seals, cleaners etc...
The exhaust manifold often cracks on these models, so if you have the same engine be sure to check it - I guess it makes sense to rebuild the water pump and replace the idler pulleys etc, but I'm just doing a repair to save money and no expert by a long shot.
I don't know what a shop would charge, but I bet $1,200 is not far off, perhaps low.
Good luck!
EDIT: After surfing around here it looks like people are paying big bucks for gasket kits - new head bolts, etc.. Guess I'll have to buy my dealer bud a six pack!
