Blown Head Gasket!!! ** Update**

Ahh Crap!!!! Long story short... I've been able to get it fixed under the recall from a while ago!! Sweet, eh? Well It's not done yet, but in the next couple of days. I do have some questions for you guys though. I should get some other things done while there at it. In regards to the recall, I know that "the campain covers all incidental repairs" I.E. Knock sensor, cuz when it's taken off it the wires will break because of the high heat enviroment. blah blah blah.... some other things to try to get changed,
1) Head gasket (no way, really?)
2) main head bolts
3) water pump
4) timing belt
5) idler pulley x 2
6) knock sensor assy.
7) o2 sensor
But do you guys think I could ask/ get these too?
1) fuel filter
2) radiator and hoses
3) misc. bearings
4) pcv valve
5) valve cover gaskets
6) cam seals
7) 48'' plasma t.v.
8) my very own Pam Anderson Look-alike servant
9) oem Toy E-Locker
10) 1 billion dollars (muaahhhaaaaa)
Thanks a bunch for any replies. If I can make this work out for the better of me that would be tickity boo!!
cheers, Lee Hathaway

The 48" Plasma is a bit overkill. 42" is plenty large in most 4Runners. Other than that, I'd say do what ever you can afford. You've already hit the major items, like the knock sensor, water pump, timing belt, etc. If you're ever going to do headers, now would be a good time.

just had mine done 4 months ago

I got a new EGR cause they damaged it
new fan shroud cause they broke it
new injectors
free oil but they charged me for the filter

Since it was apart I had them replace , for zero labor charges.
plug and wires
idler pulley
timing belt
water pump
radiator and hoses

I brought in my own parts execpt for the wires and timing belt.

Talking

Well so far it went in today, and everything looking good to go.
I've asked them to call me when they've got the plenum off because I'd like to Paint it black and then take a dremel to the "Toyota" part to make it look like bare metal. However, one of my buddies was trying to steer me away from the painting of it, because it might overheat more, i.e. bare metal cools faster than painted metal. Make sense? Anybody have experiance with this?
I've seen it done to a '92 4runner and apperently no problems. But thought I'd just check with you guys first.
Cheers, Lee Hathaway

they should replace the cam seals and valve cover gaskets as you don't usually reuse a gasket. I dunno about the plenum I just had em strip the paint off of the tag on top so now its all silver.

I got all that PLUS 7 and 8. But I gave them back, as I already had my own.

Post **Update**

Well she's getting it all done boys.... So happy to say that!! Head Gasket and labour is all paid for by the recall but the add on things that Iam getting done are as follows....
1)Timing belt $164.05
2)Upper and Lower T.B. Pulley $437.48
3)Pcv valve $11.13
4)Idler arm $350.60
5)Used exhaust mainfold $175.00
Total: $1138.26 + tax Can.
Not too bad cosidering it all....I was going to he water pump while Iam at it, but I just cant afford another $250.00. They even wanted to charge me for the head bolts, 16 of em at $19.20 a piece!!! $300.00?!? I think not. Iam not 100% sure how difficult changing the water pump but if it's anything like changing the thermostat, It's realtivley "easy". I think...
Anyways, let me know what you guys think....
Cheers, Lee Hathaway

That's a lot of $$ for the parts. I hope that includes labor costs for those items. $250 for a water pump?! Wow -- that's robbery. I'd wait to do it on your own for that cost, too. It's not exactly "easy" but manageable for a guy with average ability and tools.

And you could save yourself about $300 by doing the idler arm repair yourself:

http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/idler/

Then, you could also saved yourself the $$ they want for the exhaust manifold and buy some Downey headers!

Savings:
$325 -- if you do the idle arm bushings yourself
$175 -- by not buying a used exhaust manifold
____
$500 -- to spend on new headers! Labor to do this will never be easier or cheaper than right now, with the engine out.

Yup, one more update....

Hey Epic Ed, good call on the downey headers.... I would love to get them. However, $ is running out. You know, as soon as anybody starts a Yotatech, the wallet lightening begins I was interested in NOT doing the water pump because it would cost an extra $250.00. Looking into it a bit more, I realized that in order to change it, the timing belt has to be takin off. Well I cant do that. So, I guess that it'll be done too.... aw well. So just to reiterate....
if you head gasket goes, get EVERYTHING done!! But you all knew that right?
Hahahaha!
Cheers, Lee Hathaway

p.s. I bought the '93 full load w/ leather for 8 grand can.
I've just realized I've put in $10,300 can. in it.
This better be it for repairs

Don't pay for head bolts. They are covered under the recall. And make sure you get a rental while it's in. Also, ensure that they actually put a straight edge to the deck. There are run-out limits and you MAY ge the long block out of it.

Ah, but Lee, I'm showing you where you can get the money for those headers, bro. Any chance you'd feel up to tackling the idler arm bushings yourself? That's a $300 savings!
