I have been thinking about installing a block heater on my truck. Are they an easy installation? Do you recomend to use them?
I live in Iowa and sometimes it gets downright frigid out here!

I was curious about that as well, where do they install?

 

I had a write up that somone had done but can't find it on my computer. Basically what you do is knock out one freeze plug and replace it with the block heater. The writeup said it was a very simple job. I think the part can be gotten from partznet.com for less than $30.

Block heater under $30. But does it circulate the coolant, or just keep one part of the block warm? I guess I could check out howstuffworks.com..........

 

I have seen some that replace your oil dipstick with a heated one. It warms the oil up and the heat radiated through the metal and keep the motor somewhat warm. I think the real purpose of it is to keep the oil warm and thin so when you start it it will be able to flow easier and get things lubed up faster.

 

Install by removing a freeze plug? Are the "freeze plugs" difficult to remove?

Mine was a PITA to remove.:mad: I practically had to drill the entire thing out. It was worth it though 'cuz it sure is nice having an instantly warm heater on cold mornings. Another benefit is that it reduces needless wear and tear on my engine.
