Dude hel-coil it. My 96 has the same problem! On Cyl 1. In fact last it happened was the day everyones truck took a down fall on them. Buddies Jeeps steering gear box gave and my 4runner gave. It was almost 1 in a million chance of 2 trucks dieing the same day. But heli-coil it and forget it, I'v since put about 15K on it and till now forgot we did it.

The tool came with 6 inserts, cost a few hundred bucks, you can make the money back by finding other guys with the same problem and charging to fix it, 5 extra inserts, charge $75 each.
Ford 5.4l do this all the time, and I have yet to see a head that had to be replaced.
But some people give up easily and just go for the credit card fix without exploring the options.
