Battery meter jumps!

My '95 4Runner battery meter always jumps when you turn on the turn signals or hit the brakes or anything else like that. How can i solve this problem? I read on here about upsizing the ground wire to the alternator. Will this help and what do i need to do this? Any suggestions would be great......Thanks in advance.
