Hi i own a 1993 toyota pickup 2.4 4x4 5 speed man tires are 28s yes i know there small but i only paid 300 bucks for them with some nice rims its got about 162,000 miles on it got a 2.25 exhaust system on it k&n dropin filter and im only getting 14-15 miles a gallon on the highway any answer would help

 

be a bit more specific... manual or auto... how many miles are on it.... what size tires... is it lifted.. that sort of thing

 

May be remove the tail gate...less drag?

 

You should be happy. Your gas mileage is better than mine!

 

Thats deffinitly low for a 22re. My truck, gets about 20-22 mpg. Its lifted, I carry tools, fullsize spare, big heavy bumper. So there is deffinitly something going on with your truck. Have you checked to see if it is throwing any codes?

 

now with that information we can help you out or at least try to. There are several different things that can cause poor mileage... but with your set up you should be getting 20+. Id check the timing, maybe adjust the valves, change the fuel filter, clean the air filter, clean the throttle body, get a can of seafoam and run that through the engine ( do a search for seafoam on this board)... thats about all i can think of right now.. but you should be able to get 20+ mpg of outta that engine.... with my 88 i get 18-19 and running on 31's. yeah, could be many things...in addition to those listed above...could be O2 sensor, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor....could be a fuel leak...do you ever smell gas--especially right after shutting the engine off?

brakes might be sticking...either frozen caliper(s) up front or possible frozen e-brake in the back.

does the clutch slip at all? that will cause mileage to be bad.

what RPM level does it idle at?

personally, the first thing i would do is make sure the brakes aren't sticking. then i would pull the codes for the ecu and pull the spark plugs and check out what condition they are in. those things might help point you in the right direction.

here is a link to help with pulling the ECU codes (i've heard of codes being stored without the check engine light coming on, so i would pull them even if the light has not come on).

Im now consistantly getting 18Mpg in town and closer to 20 on the highway.

 

just use the sea foam made it smoke like mad maybe get the deep creep for the intake cuz its got some black builed up on it and i soak the intake with deep creep

 

The 88 I just got was in neglected shape, the owner boasted it got 19 mpg.

in the process of cleaning it up it has gotten; new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, TPS, a half a can of valvoline throttle body cleaner (man that throttle body was thick and black with crud, now its sparkly clean) to wash the throttle body out, nd the other half the BIG can shot right in the intake while it was running.... oil filter, and change to full synthetic and a double dose of Lucas injector cleaner in a 1/4 tank of super high test gas.

Today I decided to take it for a ride, 170 miles round trip, up mountains and on the highways.
I was pleasantly shocked at 25 MPG. I was expecting maybe 20 or 22.
if you have the cash, a good full tune, and wash out that throttle body!
oh and the synthetic oil helps a lot too.

I also discovered I have a busted universal joint in the back, thats the source of that odd vibration Ive been hearing. now its progressed on my long joy ride to a non stop nasty vibration/clank and I barely got it home.

something new for me to learn to do... in a day or 2.
as was said brakes dragging can be a factor, I had to take off all 4 wheels and clean/lube everything and replace one front caliper. when you stop feel your hubs and see if they are warm/hot, thats a sure sign something is hung up.
