Automatic Transmission Filter Change Help..
I am going to change the filter on my Auto transmission - 02 Tacoma TRD V6 4x4.
I went to the dealer and at first he said just to use RTV, then he left to get the RTV and came back with a gasket, saying there was one after all..
Problem is my haynes manual seems to say RTV too like the parts guy first said.
What is the proper sequence here - cork gasket by itself with no sealer OR RTV by itself OR cork gasket and RTV?

Nope. Dry and the bolt tightening sequence is the key for pan not to leak from my experience. One thing Ford did right....reusable rubber/wire reimforced gasket. Wish Toyota did one like that. Use a torque wrench if ya can...

Cool, thats what I thought, but just wanted to make sure no RTV is required or anything weird. Will definitely use a torque wrench and bolt sequence, that is a must for sure.

Yes Im talking about the transmission pan; haynes seems to say RTV too, but my dealer gave me this cork gasket he found somewhere, so guess thats the new way - not sure if it used to be RTV or what the deal is, but guess Ill see when I pull the pan what it had stock..

Toyota factory specs call for FIPG (RTV), I'm surprised the dealer even had a cork gasket. Pans that use cork gaskets are normally a different design with a built in ring around the bolt holes to prevent over tightening.

Yup, RTV. That gasket you have may not even match. The dealer told me to use RTV, and that the filter really does not need to be replaced. Having said that, I have over 200K miles, with the original filter. The pan was pulled once just to check the valve body and filter, then sealed with RTV -- 150K miles ago, and still holds. Every oil change, I have drained the tranny and replaced 2.5 qts. It was flushed once 100K miles ago. Good transmission hygeine makes for a happy shifter.

I have a 02 Tacoma SR5 V6 Auto. Got stuck in a mud hole drove approx 10 miles. The truck died started back up went maybe a mile and it quit again. Got out an trans. Fluid was everywhere. I had it towed home I change the fluid an filter(it was pretty bad) had some water in it. After I got the new fluid it it would start but when I tried putting it in gear it would kill the engine. After awhile it finally stopped. It shifted out rough at first but now it kinda seems its stuck in a high gear. Pedal to the floor an it's like it has no power slowly starts moving down the highway. I have also noticed that the engine ideals at a higher rpm than normal. Does anyone have any ideas? It would be greatly appreciated
