Auto tranny/ rear end clunk...

Not sure how else to put it. I have done the search and have yet find another thread with similar symptoms as mine. I noticed my 98 runner doing this when it was sitting for a bit. I would be coming to a stop and the split second before i came to a complete stop, the rear end feels like its clunking forward or something. When i lightly apply the gas and start rolling forward, i feel the the same clunk. it seems to go away when it warms up and its only ever on stop and go driving. Ideas? i bought it a few months ago and the dealer inspected the crap out of it before i got it so i would rule out a u-joint.

two things:

I am having / had this problem with my 90 P/U..

1st, i know its not this because you said everything is checked out, but i had two severly bent rear axles that would lock up on me every now and again..

2nd, check out your ebrake setup. i am having sticking issues. the linkage can freeze. lube everything and have your mechanic lube the cable. they did that to mine and now its *almost* perfect

Hope this helps!

I would put zero faith in the dealer inspecting anything for me. Besides that, a perfectly good U-joint can still clunk.

It sounds like the problem that got me the 90 4runner so cheap.

The passenger rear wheel barrings were shot. Was kind of intermittent at first then got worse, that's when i got it. Took it all apart and the thing only had like three bearing in it.

I had this problem in my 97 on the passenger side, mechanic said the seal had leaked and destroyed the bearings. New seal New bearings, problem solved.
