I do carry an extra sharp military entrenching tool and a Swiss bayonet with a 10" blade - but these are primarily for defense against feral dogs that like to get into your food - and only once in awhile to 'signal' to the occasional countryside beggar that he should 'move along' instead of hassling me for pocket change, cigarettes, etc.
