Anybody Have Solar Power?

I saw a battery charger/maintainer in a catalog for $22.00 today. It is a samll solar pannel (14"x6") that sits on your dash board and feeds your battery power. I don't think its a very necessary mod but for that price it sure would be neat and who knows when it could save you.

Has anybody added a solar power source to thier 4x4? Just wondering. It seems like a logical and cheap mod as I slowly move down the road from stocker to "Baja Taco Worthy" expedition 4Runner. Any thoughts would be appriciated. Thanks,

Lamm

Well, I know this isn't a Toyota,

But, our last surf trip down to Baja, my dad's buddy brought a huge solar panel to power his camper. It worked great. It went straight to the aux battery!

Here's the pic. Its in the bottom right. I thought it was a hell of a lot better than starting up the truck everyday.

Those small dash type are battery maintainer's. Not really designed to put back used power to start battery if you are using it for aux. power. Designed for a trickle charge for start batts. not used very often i.e. rv's use only in summer, sail boat motor batteries etc. I don't believe they have the amp output to charge a dead battery becuase you can probably find a jump in the two+ days it would take to recharge from a 'light left on' episode

Just wait until liquor powered power sources come out My school is working on it now. They can power a cell phone for a month with a single drop of Vodka. Real cool stuff...

Yea, I think these things just keep you baterie from going dead if you leave you truch parked for like 3 months without driving it.

The local VW dealer here has them too. I hope it's because they want to sell them to morons and not because VWs can't be parked without the batt going dead....

I bought one of those little 3x8s or whatever they are for my sail boat. They aren't worth the ten bucks (Harbor Freight). It will BARELY keep up a charged battery. Spend a few bucks and get one a bit bigger. On the other hand, I've owned something like 30 vehicles and never had one that doesn't hold a charge unless there was a problem to fix or a bad battery to replace.
