Another...What the heck is this thing thread...

When I peeled back the inner wheel well liner to get at my pinch weld I noticed something loose in behind it. So I reached in and wiggled out this thing:

Anyone have any idea what it is? And no comments that "it's a AA battery" either, I'm talking about the thing to the left of the battery.

My best guess is that it's sound deadener that's come loose from somewhere.

A pic at a different angle may help more.

Actually that looks like a fragment of the stock molded mud guard... It may have been caught between the wheel and some road debris at some point and thrown back in there... the inner fender was flapping loose and the po just popped her back in and replaced the mudguard as lost [if it was replaced at all]...

Definitely not an old mud-flap, wrong type of material. It's more like that of an ashphalt roofing shingle.

Here's another angle:

It WAS made of rubber when it began its life. Toyota calls it a splash guard, but 25 years of sun and rain takes its toll. They become really brittle, and end up looking liek roofing shingles lol.

They also fill the gap between the body, and the suspension/frame.
