Question Amsoil and my transmission?

Hello all,

While hunting deer this past weekend, my girlfriend's dad and I were discussing my engine and transmission in my manual 87 first gen. I am barely 60 miles away from 210,000 miles and I am starting to think its time to rebuild it. He had me put my rig in Neutral as we drove and told me to rev it. To my surprise the loud sounds I always thought were my noisy engine were gone!! He said,"See, your engine sounds fine, its your transmission that is making all the hwy noise."

My question is two fold, first is there any problem with me refilling it with Amsoil? My plan is to drain it and check for a pile of metal pouring out and then decide if it's going to crap out soon.

The second question is what I should do for a new transmission. What does it mean to have one rebuilt? Is it a sound idea, or do most people get a whole new one?

I have been having a very strange surging/shuddering problem with my rig, and I always thought it was engine related. It has always feels like I have a Jake Brake on, but now I am thinking its the transmission.

Any advice would be great

Erich

anyone have an opinion? Is it a poor idea to switch to synthetic after 16 years dino in it?

I don't see how switching to a synthetic lube could do anything but good and the Amsoil is one of the best available from what I've read. As far as rebuilding it, unless the noise is *really* bad, why bother ?

I want to be preemptive, so the noise and the surging/shuddering makes me think it will crap out at the worst time, like when I go over a pass in the winter or something. Its old, and it sounds it. I have taken care of it since I got it, but I don't know what kind of abuse it saw before that. I will know a whole lot more when I drain it. I guess I need to check my manual and see how much it needs when I refill it.

Dude,

I have never had any trannies rebuilt personnally, but I have had many friends that have tried to go that route. They more often than not had to go back for some kind of problem. Even a couple of times, they ended getting new ones because the shop that did the work messed everything up. So, to save yourself some time, pain, and a headache, get a remanufactured or brand new one.

With the new oil, I would do that for now and save up for a new tranny.

Later,
joseph
