Yep, i am doing that with my 160 amp from ace alternators on ebay as we speak actually.

 

wow that sucks i just picked up a 140A gm alt for 150

and it more or less bolts in

 

Just FYI for those reading this, stay away from Ace altornators.

Went through 2 of them in as many weeks and both had no more power then stock. I am back to using the stocker now.

 

I just got one from them. What was the problem and how do I test the amps? They're claiming 140 amps for the one I bought.

 

Well the first one i got died completely after about 4 days, plus when it was working it had no more power.

The second one i got just plain didn't have anymore power then stock, plus i think it was going out too, the voltage was only about 13.5.

I know they had no more power then stock because i have a totall of ~400watts worth of lights on my truck. Which is about 30 amps. Plus i have radio, fans and other goodies for another 15 amps or so.

The stock alt is 85 amps, the ace alt one claims 160 amps. So it should EASILY light all my lights and have plenty to spare. but i could only turn on 2 sets of lights before voltage started dropping (this is with reving the engine to ~2000rpm for max output). by the 3rd set i was at battery voltage, almost exactly what the stock alt could do.

That might be your best bet, there is another place that MtGoat set me on to that rebuilds altornators and the price was not that bad.

If i can get a refund for the ace i plan to get one of those.

 

Hey Night Runner, Is that a Mean Green 140amp you found for 150? If so where did you get it and how do you like the performance?

 

Unless you're looking for more amps, why not just opt for an alternator rebuild? With Toyotas, 90% of the time they just need new brushes, which cost a whopping $5

 

Which is why i got my new one, i need more power then the stock one can provide. I can only use 1 set of lights and still get full voltage, flip on the second and it drops a 3rd set and i am at battery voltage.

But for now i guess i will live with it, i only use the lights here and there and usualyl 1 set will do the job, i just really like overkill. lol

 

Yeah, I've been checking out your rig. You've done a "Go big or go home" build so i'm suprised you didn't opt for the nuclear reactor, lol!

 

Know where i can get one for cheap? My flux capasiter needs more juice then i have right now.

Its also a good idea to upgrade the wire size from the alt. to the batt/starter if running a lot of accessories with an upgraded alt. Prevent wildfires...under your hood.

 

try getting one from iraggi. they're a bit more pricey, but have a pretty good rep within the car audio industry. the dominator series (i belive) that i was looking at was 369 w/ 1 year replacement, and lifetime help. 180amps max, 115 idle. not too shabby imo. ill be pairing it with my current kinetik 1800 under the hood, and 2400 out back for my sundown 50.4 and 1500 @ .5ohms.

So what was the final decision for aftermarket alternators? Mean green are claiming 300% more which equates to 80 amps stock (80*300%)= 240? I think which is a bit much for my application or is it?

There is no such thing as too much but i doubt they are really getting that much power unless they cost $500++

 

you could try iraggi since they're semi-reputable, but customer service is kinda sketchy. they're on ebay and Dominicks SN is trafficjamz.

i dont know about having anything over 200a in our nippon denso casing...it's simply not big enough to have enough windings for much higher than that.

i got a 200a alt from inter-linc alts and Jake Ballard has great customer service and is very knowledgeable about alternators and electrical, being a spl competitor himself. I idle at 14.7-14.9ish and with 300amps of draw from my substage alone in my last testing, i was dropping to 13.6ish volts on a spl burp. that's with a kinetik 1800 up front and a 125ah (equivalent to kinetik 2400) battery out back. ill be doubling power in a few weeks so well see how it holds up, but i would recommend inter-linc from personal experience.

and yeah..there's no such thing as overkill...better to have more than not enough.

oh, and inter-linc strives to give affordable pricing for a good charging system, and my alternator came in at $350 shipped w/ 1+ year warranty and great customer service
