Aftermarket Alternator
 

Hi all,

Have any of you guys replaced your stock alternator? I have a 3rd gen with about 85k on it, and am wondering what the lifespan on these things are. Also I've made some stereo and video additions and am running a Flex-A-Lite electric fan - I'm starting to think that a higher output alternator would be something I might want to invest in (I've noticed some dimming of my lights when I'm not on the throttle).

Which aftermarket alternators would you recommend and how much are we talkin? Are they the same size as the stock one - just plug and play, or do you have to make additional modifications? Anyone have any pics??

Well Ohio Generator has a HUGE following in DB Drag, but they are damn pricey. I know www.mralternator.com has 130 amp direct replacements for our toys, but I have yet to get one.

Thanx for the link, Steve. I e-mailed them to find out if they have something for my truck. Do you or anyone else know the specs (amperage) on our stock alternator? Just curious......

I believe they are 80amp for the 3vze engine (and 5vze or whatever the 3.4L is) and 70 for the 22re (not exactly sure on the 22re's though)

I don't see anything for a toyota on that site. I'm interested though, cuz I need to upgrade my alt.

BTW, I thought all toyota alternators in the pickups and 4Runners were 60 amp.

Im not sure on the 22re, but im pretty sure the stock alts on the 3.0 and 3.4 were 80amp. Ill do some digging on that though.

Hey guys,

I bought a replacement alternator from Advance Auto back in 2/94. I just replaced it last week. It had a Lifetime warrenty and I kept the receipt. I put 70-80k on the alternator. I dunno the amperage but its problebly on the paperwork at home. I will check.

Back then I paid 105 with tax for it. Currenty the price has dropped some. I think the price today w/o tax is in the low to mid 80's.

mean green has a 140 amp factory replacement alternator for the 3.4L

its quite a bit though - 350-500. cant remember

im actually researching this right now. and i work at a kragen. i took some spare time to dig into this. the 3vze uses a 60amp stock, the 3.4 uses a 70amp stock, and the v8 runners use an 80amp stock. i compared them all on my parts counter and they all have the same case, same computer connections, same bracketting. the only difference being the output. so if you have the 3vze you can safley mod to an alt. for a 2007 v8 80amp runner and not have to worry about any modifications to mount or install. also all the same pulley sizes. all serpentine types. this is a good idea to do if you just recently installed some offroad lights and have noticed your interior lights fade or blink if you turn your a/c on or are running a bunch of accessories at the same time. adding a higher output alternator will not harm your battery. it will only do this if the voltage regulator goes out. to monitor my battery level and charging system i bought a charging system monitor from my work (kragen auto), and also installed a second auxilary 12v socket strip. i put in the monitor and now i can see what kind of effect running my fog lights, stereo, and a/c at the same time does to my charging system. it really bogs it down. in short....the 60amps just sometimes isnt enough

LCE has a 200amp for our trucks too. I just replaced mine in my truck with one from autozone (lifetime warranty :hillbill: ) and my truck has about 150k.

In fact once I took the old one off I had it bench tested and it was still good. It was covered in dried mud, and Im sure on occasion that it was under water!!! So I would say they are a good design.

The reason I replaced it was because all the wires from the alternator had burned up!! And I was scared it would happen again.

By the way automatic trucks were 70 amp and the manual trucks were 60 amp.

Got it in 2 weeks ago and it looks great, just waiting to install it until i install my Superchager. For the price you can't really beat it, and 170 amps is more then enough.

I also did a lot of looking at these and found that most HO versions were $300+ for only a few more amos (most were 200). So $150 for a 170 amp was by far the best deal i could find. And there feedback says that they are good quality. I am going have mine tested before i install it and see what the stats are on it.

lifetime on alternator ? a long time. 10-15-20 years is possible

The stock Denso on my 22RE went to 300K. After replacing it with an Autozone alt. a few times (lifetime warranty again) I figured out that the main "ALT" fuse in the fuse block was getting corroded and fouling up my charging system.

The 70 amp automatic alternator for a 22re is actually cheaper then the 60 amper for my 94, Will a 3.4 alt work on a 22re

I have seen 180 amp alt for the 22re on ebay for under $160. I bought my 160amp for my 3.4 truck from them.

I am going to take a look at Ace Alternator on E-Bay. 170 amps would be nice for the stereo upgrade I'm planning.

so if my 3.4 is 70 amp alt.. i can install a 140 amp with no mods to do?? just plug and play so to speak??
