I'm looking to get a rack of some kind, whether it be attached to the canopy, or this http://haulerracks.com/html/cap_camper_racks.html

However, the canopy one can support 200 lbs, minus 50 for the basket, so 150 lbs. Or there's the hauler rack, it supports 1000lbs. not that i'd ever put that much weight up there.

Cost isn't too different, canopy is 450, the hauler rack is 550.

So, i know it doesn't look GREAT, but do you guys thinks it's worth the extra 100 and the look to get 1000 lbs of weight support vs 150 lbs?

 

if you need it for function, get the hauler.... but if you know youre never going to put more than 150lb up there, then go for the better looks style. But im sure youll find stuff to put up there knowing you have 1000lbs. Ive seen some nice set ups similar to the hauler that looks really nice, but i have no idea of brand. If you have a tractor supply store around you, check there, i think that is where i saw it.

 

Has anyone made up a boob related joke yet to oly884's request for 'rack' advice? Cause I got nothing

 

i think if you got the 1000lb one, you wouldnt have to worry about putting stuff up there. you wouldnt have to hesitate to throw 'one more thing' up top because you know it can handle it. also, you would be able to get up on it if you ever need to without having to worry about it bending/breaking. (maybe for taking pictures?)

 

1000 lbs- thats alot of gear- I'd definitely go with that one.

I want to build a platform up there if i do get it, I've got a tent that would probably fit great. If it's hot out, it beats sleeping in the canopy.

Plus a great platform for pics, sitting, what have you.

Any rack that support 150 lbs or more is not going to be esthetically pleasing...

 

Depending on the color of your truck and camper... they would look good black I bet. I've seen a full size ford with a similiar set up and it was pretty tough looking actually. It was black w/lights on front.

 

Those pictured are hideous -- very industrial/commercial. I'd stick with a regular rack.

I have not been able to yet.

After talking with my bro (really good at fabbing things up) I was told that he could make one of those quite easy, and have just the part over the canopy instead of the whole meal deal. Also, it'd be a lot cheaper than buying one.

The mounts and the posts will be made of steel, and the top part will be made of aluminum. It should be pretty damn strong when all is said and done.

 

I think you mentioned something about putting a 'tent' on top of it ealier. Are you still looking into that. Too bad they don't make something fairly cheap for truck shells to get more room in them (or on top of them). Along the lines of the Volkswagen camper van. Now that would be pretty cool. I wonder if someone could gut one of those camper vans for that top and get it to work on a camper shell. Or fab up something similiar.

 

Yeah, I'm going to have the ablility to put a tent up on top. I also think it'd be cool to have a canopy that has that option. I know I've seen things like them, but they are really a true camper and have a lot of additional weight to them (not like mine is going to be any lighter, but...)

Now I've just got to get some time at home so that I can have my bro do it for me.
