ADD relay location.......
Anyone know exacltly were the ADD relay is? I know it's under the instrument panel on the passenger side of the steering column, but I can't find it. Do you have to take apart the dash? Thanks

I am not sure exactly where it is but pretty sure you'd have to remove some stuff to get to it. I know when I hit 4WD I can hear the relay click somewhere behind about where the key is or so. A FSM would probably show you the location. Lot's of guys on here have them. Good Luck

super old thread, hoping someone can point me in the right direction for the ADD relay. I called toyota and they said my 4runner was solely controlled by the 4wd ECU in the driver side kick panel, which i think is BS! I have a 1999 4runner 3.4L with J-shifter. automatic. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

He might've not thought about the link going bad. Anywho...

w/pic of said relay post#3 though post#5 confirms it as for a 1999 for a 4wd manual trans. Another thread on expedition portal mentions the same place for a 98 auto tranny 4Runner. Good ol' Google.
I'm not popping my front passenger sill and kick panel to confirm, it's too cold and I don't currently need the answer. You can do it for your ownself if you wish, then go ahead and help others with a post and pic of wherever you do find it.

If you want help, you should post your year and transmission. I will confirm that '99 manual is as pictured above. There are many different configurations of transmissions and the components move around.

ADD relay location for Automatic Tran
Does anyone on this thread know where the ADD relay is for a automatic transmission? I have a 2002 limited with auto transmission. I'm not sure if they are in the same location. Any help would be appreciated!
Also, my 4x4 is engaging and disengaging on its own. I do not have the 4wd switch on, but it will sometimes jump into 4wd and then jump out a little while later. Any thoughts?

Taco I have no idea.
Describe your problem better. How do you know it jumped into 4wd? From the light, or the way it drives, or what?

It is a 2002 4runner limited. So, if I am reading it correctly, you are saying there is no ADD relay in my vehicle.
As for the arbitrary engage/disengage, the lights on the dash are always blinking. I know it jumps into 4x4 by the way it drives. It never happens when I am driving straight down the road. It does it at slow speeds and usually when I'm making a sharper turn like into a parking space or my driveway. It may remain in 4x4 for a day or less or it may return to 2wd the next time I start it up and drive off.

Taco or 4Runner? If 4Runner, no ADD relays in 2002 as no manual trans made. Just 4wd ECU.
