Hi guys, new here, but not to toyota forums. This place seems to have good info so i figured i'd join and check it out. After passing through some deep water, i have an unsettling about of accessory belt noise. I'm trying to understand the pulley setup the 5vz has. So far i've found the idler pulley and the a/c pulley at different autoparts stores. The a/c from gates, the idler, not sure the company. I'm worried about my P.S. pulley, and is there a waterpump pulley as well i should look for? If so, where?

Also, how hard is it to change these pulleys? Simply remove the center bolt and install the new one? or no?

 

I think before you throw parts at it, you should remove some belts to see if the noise goes away. Probably not all of them make noise. The power steering, alternator, and AC can be remove. The water pump pulley is thread through with timing belt. You get to it by removing the lower front engine cover.

 

probably the fan pulley, i dont know just throwing it out there.

 

i dont think the pullies would be bad after a water crossing, if they are there and round, they are likely fine. i would look at new belts. try this, if your belts are squeaking, or if you want to make sure it is your belts squeaking, take some baby powder and give the INSIDE if each belt (where it will contact the pulley) a shot of powder. if its belts, they will quiet immediately, and this will probly last a few hundred miles, and it smells good.

 

Oh yeah? Good to know. I picked up new belts. I want to start taking belts off to check which ones are noisy, but i don't know how to tension them properly when i put them back on so that has me worried.

 

i think theres a writeup on YT about belt tension, but its something that will always be up for debate, some like them loose, some like them tight... i try to set mine so that they have maybe 3/8" deflection either way in a longer run of the belt.
