Well, I just bought the FSM access for the next 2 days and dug into the wiring diagrams... I think I figured out how to disable the ABS system in the exact same way that engaging the factory locker (RR DIFF LOCK) does. Just one wire that needs to be grounded on the ABS ECU is all. I'll be testing it out soon and posting the results... No more restarts to re-engage, chopping the ABS actuator harness, or removing the fuse... hopefully

All that should be required is a switch, some wire, and possibly a diode

Keep us posted, after driving in some wicked snow storms this winter I realy dislike the 4runners ABS.

What exactly are you using for a switch ?
a on off toggle or something that you just push once to turn off, But at the next startup abs is still on .

As for now, I tried grounding the pin associated with the diff lock circuit and the ABS remains active... in both 2high, 4 high, and 4 lo

Yup. I would like to disable mine. Its weird, I never had issues with it on my 96, but my 97 is constantly buzzing when I do any hard stops over rough terrain. Super annoying.

So I've read from other posts and according to others, that engaging the elocker disables the ABS system, but I've found nothing in the official service manuals that confirms this. The FSM does show a wire coming from the elocker, and several 4wd sensors, but as I asked before, I'm wondering if the ABS part number is different for vehicles with the factory e locker than those without. I grounded all of these pins, with no effect.

I did, however, just unplug the ABS ECU for temporary relief

The thing with Toyota part numbers I have seen them change from year to year.

Even from vehicle to vehicle for the exact same part..

I would be willing to bet the elocker has a different computer to allow the abs to be shut off.

That is why I like my older trucks

According to toyotapartszone.com, there are different ABS computers for models that have the RR DIFF Lock... that likely solves the questions. I'll likely be looking for a replacement ABS ECU

**edit** Never mind - I re-read your posts and found out you already tried this in 4LO. I'll leave my post instead of deleting it on the off chance that I've provided some other useful info here ** end edit**

The other thing that might have some bearing on this: the diff lock is only allowed to engage in 4LO unless you do the "grey wire mod".

You may have to simulate this mod as well, but first try grounding the wire that you have identified while your truck is in 4LO to see if you get a result. If you get a result that way, I can work with you to get it working in all transfer modes.

On the 4runners with VSC and Traction control you have to trick the 4WD ECU, the Engine ECU, and the VSC ECU all at the same time to take control over the skid control system. All the ECU's "talk" to each other over a single wire and if they all don't agree on transfer case position, diff lock status, etc - it trips a fail-safe mode.

My .02: yank the ABS fuse, pull the dash light and forget about it. The 96-98 4Runners are safer all year round without ABS. Seriously, my wife's 2001 RAV4 does not have ABS, and it's a million times safer during inclement road condition's than my sister's '97 4runner with ABS on. I pulled the fuse on the '97....and my sister loves it. Wet, dry, snow, ice, whatever. Good tires and little driving skill are WAY better than the crappy system no matter what the road conditions.

So here is the latest... So I sourced a used ABS computer from a 4Runner that had the factory diff lock, and tried to ground the diff lock pin, and had no luck disabling the ABS. In fact, I'm still trying to figure out why, but as soon as I plugged in the new ECU, my ABS light stayed on without any ABS function at all.

Hmmm I'll have to reread this well. I have an always disabled ABS on my FZJ. I'd rather have a switch. I've been doing some icy road braking tests with my new BFG KO2's and It skids more easily than I imagined. I know its heavy as hell and I'm not running true snow tires. I'd like to re-enable my abs for these conditions : A switch so I can go back to factory abs on when in awd. Although I have heard gripes about the FJ80s Abs, on other vehicles I have driving the abs is a veritable stopping miracle in icy/wet conditions.
