What standard AT fluid are you using in your 99 4runner automatic V6 ?

Manual calls for Dexron III. I have been using Castrol High Mileage, but plan on switching to AMSoil universal ATF in near future.

If $$$ is not a deciding factor, the Amsoil ATF, Eneos, or Redline D4.

If $$$ is an issue, Castrol Import Vehichle ATF worked well for me for 30,000 miles until the switch to Redline.

The only one I would be wary of using is the new formula Maxlife ATF. It made my buddy's A343F start slipping after a month. So far on a change to Castrol Import and 7,000 miles since the flush, it has had no more problems.

2002 running Valvoline Max Life DEX/MERC ATF with no issues. If you search the Internet (bobistheoilguy.com is a great site) you will find that this ATF is great quality for the money. I did the dilution method (dump the pan and refill) a few times over the course of 1-2 months to get the old stuff out.

Oh, and I have 134,xxx miles on the clock.

Chris

Eating crow here...

Spoke with my friend with the A343 tranny a couple of hours ago, one of his solenoids bit the dust for his Cruiser. So it probably was not the Maxlife after all. Add it to your list of candidates.

As Smokey said, the BITOG folks do love it, even for T-IV applications:

3K is nothing for ATF, that's overkill and then some. And you're flushing it too? That takes like 12+ quarts! You could be saving a lot of $$ and go 10xs longer - to 30K intervals and still be safe and within recommended service.

After doing some research here and on BITOG, I'm using T-IV, which is the same as the Mobile 3309. It's made for our transmissions, apparently. I'm on my second batch of it since owning the 4R. Things seem to be working fine.

I did find this TSB a while back when looking at the same thing, I'm not saying it would be harmful as I think IV is a better fluid, just passing it along.

I used 12 qts of castrol import car trans fluid.

I have another lube issue:
90w for my 99 runner rear diff is hard to fond in any store. Napa sells quicksilver
90w gear lube for lower mercruiser units. Marine grade. Is this ok for my rear diff??
Thanks, kenny S

The thicker 90wt, marine or not, may hurt the MPGs. I would not use the marine unless you are exposing the differential to many deep water crossings. That said, I knew a boat dealer in SC who ran nothing but GL-4 oil in his Ford diffs and had zero problems with them.

Go back to Napa and tell them you want the Valvoline Durablend 80w-90 since Napa is a full Valvoline liquids retailer.
